A mated pair of beautiful Sandhill Cranes photographed foraging in the grass in a local neighborhood. Such elegant and stately birds, they are easily recognizable with the distinctive crimson red heart on their forehead and the beautiful gray and sometimes rust plumage.

On Alert
A Sandhill Crane stands perfectly still with me fairly close and remains on alert while shooting some shots. I do like the silent shooting of the mirrorless cameras as my DSLR would have surely scared it off. There were actually quite a few Sandhill Cranes at the Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge today.

Sandhill cranes are the largest species of crane in North America. Here are a few dozen in the shallows on Sauvie Island, north of Portland, Oregon in January of this year. They are migrating through and depend on wetlands for quality food sources and to rest up before the next leg of their journey.

A juvenile Sandhill Crane sits in front of a bush, almost resembling an awkward turkey.
A subspecies of Sandhill Cranes are native to #Florida, and live in the area year-round.
#Cranes lay one or two eggs each season, and both parents raise the young cranes until it is time for them to lay eggs again.
Immature cranes have sparse, light brown feathers.
Cranes eat berries and fruit, as well as insects, small reptiles and lizards, and small fish and crustaceans, depending on what’s available.

The birds on the wing had been in the marsh in the foreground and took to the air when a pair of bald eagles landed in a tree behind us. At 0:09 you can hear the eagles shrieking and chirping. The cranes landed farther away where a larger group was standing.
