Slowly the cardigan grows. I’m not much for #knitting when it’s summer but I am grateful for this hands busy work as I sit with Mom, who had a fall today.

My partner’s parents are going into care so there’s lots of organising happening, but his and his sister’s phone numbers are swapped on the intake records — the number of calls he gets where the care-providers explicitly intended to call his sister is telling.

The assumption of the care burden on the daughter not the son is especially stark since he’s been equally involved in helping right from the start, and when he works flexibly from home while his sister works full time at an office.

Don’t even get me started on how often I’d get the call to collect a sick kid from school even when he was listed as first contact due to his job being more flexible than mine.

@picardonhealth Thank you for this reminder. My 89yo mother lives in our family bungalow fairly independently but my nearby sister visits multiple times per day. We are so lucky to have her. We’ve brought in meal service & Nurse Next Door for 3h/day 5 days/week. It’s helpful but not ideal. Sometimes we lean more toward institutional care but that frightens us too. It’s no fun. And Mom’s quality of life is reduced either way.

This is of much interest to me since I feel that my wife and I will eventually become part of the segment of the population it describes. It's also a concern since I don't think my parents are financially and economically stable (they're now in their early 60s), and I feel like they don't care too much about it either. They always tell me, "I shouldn't be worried about them." Hopefully, this year I can instill some sense of urgency in them 🤞.

Fwiw, my family will not need to pay for Daycare in a few years (expensive!) and will have a bit more breathing room to deal with this sort of challenge.

I am a member of the #SandwichGeneration, caring for adultish children and a (sometimes) childlike parent. I am grateful that my mother is economically independent. It is difficult, though, trying to manage a multigenerational household. Listening to music helps me cope with the stress. I really only get a chance to listen after mom goes to bed, so that's why I post at pretty much the same time each day. Some days I am just too beat to post. And some days I drink and post too much.

My mom has been battling cancer the last almost 5 years… it’s now metastatic endometrial cancer

We recently got bad news…

Her treatment was not effective (this is the 5th different tx)… 3 rounds of chemo and immunotherapy and now hormonal tx…

We won’t know next steps until we see her oncologist next week…
