If you haven't seen it, here's the recent news story that ran in the Chronicle last Saturday.
We've uncovered the story of the photographer along with how the cabinet was discarded and later found. Still hoping the other two will turn up. I think it's possible.

This seems like an amazing way to spend a few hours! Info from the Headlands Center for the Arts:

Saturday, August 26, 6:30–8:30PM

Board the Maritime Museum’s historic ship The Balclutha to witness the filming of Torreya Cummings’ art work: Barbary Coast Keelhaul.

Part live performance, part video production, this work is meant to honor the historical existence of persons subject to this law. Performers, dressed in a variety of interpretations of maritime drag, will stage the “keelhauling” of a waterproof camera on a rope. Audience members are invited on board to witness this work in progress and may have the opportunity to participate as extras in the film. This project, while based in history, is a work of barely-narrative fiction.

Thematic attire (nautical, of any era) is welcomed, but not required. A small reception with snacks and drinks will follow the filming.

China Basin Aerial, 1970c
Still a couple of extant landmarks on the site of the ballpark.
Talking a lot about found photos this week, particularly sides. They are hard to look at & very easy to toss out. I found this one at SCRAP & I'm glad I did. Send me yours.

Palace of Fine Arts, circa 1964
These aren't the best shots I have of the decrepit PoFA, but they're good examples of why not to trust the date on Kodachrome slides. Dated Aug 1965, the Palace was demolished by Nov 64. These sat in the camera for almost a year!

Before & after construction of the pedestrian staircase between Cumberland & 19th Streets.

Until recently, this slope was thought to be impassable by vehicles.

Cole Valley, circa 1895
View west from about Parnassus & Clayton
I'll admit, this one is hard to visualize but the two houses on the right still stand at 140 & 138 Carl Street. Development ensued soon after this & had already started north of the view toward Haight.

NEW: How LGBTQ+ activists and others used money to send a message.

Ungraded Streets
The other day I rode my bike out Alemany & came across this concrete tower. It's a manhole, placed before the street was graded. The top was planned to be at the level of the graded street.
Sometimes plans didn't work out.

Market Street near Fremont, 1906

Identifying 1906 earthquake (or before) pics is hard. How are you supposed to find these long gone places?

Then I discovered 1895 Illustrated Directory, digitized by @davidrumseymaps
It's an indispensable resource. davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/v

Stockton Street, 1913
The grade of Stockton Street was lowered to accommodate the south entrance of the tunnel under Bush, which resulted in the former entrance of 417 Stockton (now the Mystic Hotel) becoming the second floor.
