I finished reading this #book on the #immortal #Sappho this evening. I took my time with the #poetry reading through the #odes and #fragments a few times. The #lyricism is unsurpassed. I can only imagine what they must have sounded like, sung in #ClassicalGreek. I was most impressed by her references to #astronomy. Last night, I finished my first read through #Sappho ‘s #poetry. I’m impressed by their #lyrical #beauty even in translation. I can only imagine what they’re like in #classical #greek. I’m going to go over them again before I begin the section on the #Sapphic influence on other #literary #traditions. #books #literature

I've somehow convinced myself that I need to reread at least the first 3 #AnneOfGreenGables books, a scholarly monograph on #Sappho, a new translation and commentary on my old thesis topic, and some collection of essays on #AnneCarson before I get proceed any further on #writing my potential book. Okay, fine, sure. Guess I'm doing this the hard way...

Fun #Sappho fact: we say her name in English as "saf-oh", but she spelled her own name Ψάπφω, which would be pronounced more like "psap-faw." (Those initial P's didn't use to be silent!)

I was surprised to discover they really are.
