Are small reactors a viable non-emitting energy solution? This excellent lays out the challenges pretty clearly. To sum up, SMRs are:
1. entirely THEORETICAL, as none has yet been built;
2. EXPENSIVE, with IEA estimating costs could run to double those of conventional nuclear and the Sask Party floating a figure of $5 billion per reactor;
3. SLOW TO DEPLOY, with even aspirational targets not having the first come online until 2028 in , 2034 in , while “An early SMR built by Oregon’s NuScale was originally supposed to generate electricity by 2016, but the completion date has since been pushed to 2029 or 2030”; and
4. even more VULNERABLE TO SUPPLY CHAIN DISRUPTION than oil, with the models Ontario and Sask are building requiring enriched uranium fuel, which will have to come from outside Canada.

A long power outage tonight on a cold, icy night. Many thanks to amazing crews for working late in the freezing rain to restore our electricity!
