Day 8 of the #SatDNETour – S2E11 Settle Thy Studies is my final recommendation. It tells the story of a particularly unsettling haunting in Cardiff, another of my favourite cities. I’m going to get serious now so cw for queer erasure.

I have included this story even though it doesn’t directly involve the North East and saved it for last because it is one of my favourite from this podcast, and what struck me most about it were the narratives about queer isolation and belonging.

The Northern Pride March starts each year (pandemics permitting) from the front of Newcastle Civic Centre, with its tower surmounted with the heads of the city’s civic heraldic beast, the hippocampus.

Day 7 #SatDNETour is slightly out of order – S2E12 Quem Infra Nos takes place in Durham Cathedral, interment place of the Venerable Bede and in this classically M.R. Jamesian tale, apparently someone else far less wholesome is infra nos.

I completed my PhD at Durham in 2012 and was lucky enough to graduate in this spectacular and ancient building. I somehow went the wrong way and got lost trying to find my seat after collecting the scroll but we don’t talk about that.

Day 5 of #SatDNETour – S2E02 Slender Chances features an internet favourite spawned on the Something Awful forums where I misspent some of my youth.

The episode is set in Penshaw, and features a lot of local folklore from the Chester-Le-Street are of County Durham, including the tale of the Lambton Worm.

Penshaw Hill, around which the Great Wyrm reportedly coiled itself is topped by a faux Greek temple, Penshaw Monument which can be seen from the A1 Motorway and on a good day as far as the Cheviot Hills to the north.

I’ve spent a lot of time working with scary chemicals during my career as a scientist and this episode really brought back some memories of disposing of things that could kill me, let me tell you internets.
