Last week I shared a Roman coin from Gallienus featuring a stag. This week, I have another from the same series, featuring an Antelope. Even more interesting, like my Henry III penny, it has been cut in half! But why? Now a more modern one I just like the look of. 100 Francs from #Tunisia, 1950. Not least of which because it is a coin with a "Design" no one knows! What is the design? You decide! In fact, do please tell me, as I am curious now... https://coinofnote.com/tunisia-100-francs-1950-1370/ #SaturdayNightCoinShow #CoinCollecting #Numismatics #Crescent Should have saved this for #WhatIsItWednesday

What was the first Roman coin? Possibly an early variant of this one. Either way, Janus & a ship's prow has a lot of history, from early #Rome, #doors and #transition, to #Pompeii, to a month of the year and the beginnings of coin-based games of #chance - this piece has it all: https://coinofnote.com/roman-republic-aes-grave-janus-ships-prow/ #SaturdayNightCoinShow #History #Collecting #CoinCollecting #Ship

I love learning about the way things used to be different. Did you know that giving someone a half penny in change used to mean EXACTLY that - a penny, cut in half? Here's one from Henry III's time: 1247 - 1279. Now, the final part of that rabbit hole the milled cash coins sent me on... What was the last Cash coin anywhere in the world? Unless I'm wrong, it was this one: the Bảo Đại Thông Bảo from #Vietnam More at https://coinofnote.com/vietnam-bao-dai-thong-bao-the-last-cash-coin/ #SaturdayNightCoinShow #History #TheLast #Final #End #Numismatics #CoinCollecting #Cast

Another milled Cash coin is this Guang Xu Tong Bao from #China. Interestingly featuring a square inner rim, but a round central hole. There is an interesting size comparison between this and a cast cash coin of the era at https://coinofnote.com/china-guang-xu-tong-bao-milled/ #SaturdayNightCoinShow #CoinCollecting #History #Numismatics #Cast #Milled #Asia

I find these thin, machine-struck cash coins quite an interesting juncture between the cast cash coins which were used for several thousand years, and modern minting techniques. Here is a Khải Định Thông Bảo 1 Cash coin, which was issued in #Vietnam from 1916-1926. More at: https://coinofnote.com/vietnam-1-cash-khai-dinh-thong-bao-milled/

In the last newsletter, I went down an interesting rabbit hole of Asian coins. It's taken me two weeks of #SaturdayNightCoinShow, to get to sharing them here. The next newsletter is coming out this week, so if you'd like to hear what rabbit holes I end up down this time, without having to wait weeks for me to get to sharing here, you'd best subscribe! https://coinofnote.com/newsletter/ #Numismatics #CoinCollecting #Coins #History #Newsletter

I would like to play a little with making some coin photos a little more artistic - purely for the sake of art - what hashtags might be worth using for such pieces please? if there is a "day" for photo art (like #SaturdayNightCoinShow for coins and #TokenTuesday for tokens) that would be perfect!

Subscribers to the Coin Of Note #newsletter will have noticed this week that I went down a rabbit hole of fascinating #Asian coins recently. The first of these, is the 1 Cash Qian Long Tong Bao from the Ming dynasty in #China. This 1 Văn coin was issued Minh Mạng of Vietnam between 1800 - 1822. Vietnamese Văn coins were similar to the Chinse Cash coins, although often slightly smaller and lighter than their Chinese counterparts. #SaturdayNightCoinShow #Saturday #CoinCollecting #Numismatics #coins

Another historic coin is the French Liard, which translates to English as "Farthing", but it's much more complex than that. This coin, complex or not, is definitely a #Smoothie, it's very worn, but not so much that I can't tell you it is a 1657 Liard de #France, issued at Limoges. I've written up some more info at: https://coinofnote.com/1657-liard-de-france/ #SaturdayNightCoinShow

Here is a #Byzantine Follis, issued under Romanus III. Known as an "Anonymous" follis because the emperor's name or image are not on the coin. Instead, an image of #Christ on one side, with a #cross and text proclaiming "Jesus Christ
King of Kings" on the other. But why was Romanus III not a great emperor regardless? More at: https://coinofnote.com/romanus-iii-byzantine-follis/ #SaturdayNightCoinShow #Rome

The Denga, a coin from Russia, issued since at least the mid 14th century. In 1535, #Russia was the first country to go #decimal with the Denga worth 1/100 Rubles. I found an argument that they continued to also use non-decimal until after 1800 but I can't find references for that? Any help? Meanwhile, here is a Denga from 1749, issued under Elizaveta Petrovna. It's #WorldHoneyBeeDay - so here is a 10 Lire from San Marino 1974. This was an #FAO (The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN) coin. There are many FAO coins from all different nations to collect (although this is the only one with a bee for today 😀🐝 ) #SanMarino #SaturdayNightCoinShow #Bee #HoneyBee

I do like coins with holes, and #Fiji delivers! There is a nice set of Fiji pennies from 1934-1968 which feature a hole. Here is a 1957 Fiji Penny, issued under Queen Elizabeth II. The holed design means only her name, and not her portrait appear on the coin. More at: https://coinofnote.com/fiji-1957-penny/ #SaturdayNightCoinShow
Now another coin with an interesting denomination. The #Guernsey 1830 4 Doubles. As with most British territories, 12 Pence = 1 Shilling • 20 Shillings = 1 Pound. But 1 Penny wasn't 1 Penny... It was 8 Doubles... So 4 Doubles = 1/2 Penny. The name "double" derived from the French "double deniers", although the value of the coin was equal to the liard (three-denier piece) - as #French coins had been predominantly used before 1830 and still circulated. #SaturdayNightCoinShow

The 1763 Poltura from #Hungary is a nice, and in some ways "typical" coin from this #Christian nation. Well mine is a bit of a #Smoothie, but I like it. And then I tried to understand 18th century Hungarian currency denominations! (I failed): https://coinofnote.com/1763-hungary-poltura/ #SaturdayNightCoinShow
