Alinsky himself was an unabashedly leftist radical, organizing efforts in communities to respond to all sorts of unfairness. I wonder how he would have reacted to radicals on the conservative right, like the Tea Party during the Bush II years, appropriating his methods to do exactly the opposite — to perpetuate inequity in our society.

Presentation on activism and at the Progressive Democratic Club by @colinparent

1. Identity a problem
2. Propose a solution to that problem (optional)
3. Remind the public who is responsible to fix that problem (creatively and repeatedly)
4. Thank them if they do something to solve the problem, even if they didn't do it in the exact way you proposed (this can be hard)

Today in Labor History January 30, 1909: Organizer Saul Alinsky was born in Chicago, Illinois. He worked with the Industrial Areas Foundation, in Chicago, helping tenants fight their landlords. In 1972, he published "Rules for Radicals," a guide for organizers and community activists. The first rule was: “Power is not only what you have, but what your enemy thinks you have.” Another rule was "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon. There is no defense. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule. Also, it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage."
