#Florida #SB256 Thread of the Day
According to the calendar, there are about 70 bills on Third Reading ahead of SB256 today. Session starts at 10am EST. We fully expect this anti-union bill to be passed today.
Not sure if I will be there in person or not today, but I will be watching the livestream. When debate gets underway for this bill, I will add to the thread any interesting points. Given that this is a Republican sponsored bill, we again expect this to pass without issue as both chambers here are Republican controlled and there have historically not been enough votes against it.
As a reminder, this bill is deeply unpopular with constitutes across the aisle. This would force unions to submit a yearly audit done by a CPA, require #union members to pay dues directly instead of deducted from their paychecks, and require unions to have 60% of members paying dues to remain certified (though we're reminded that if they don't, members can vote to keep their union...Anually.)

Well, without much fanfare, #SB256 is now on Third Reading before the #FL House
I applaud the Representatives, on both sides, who attempted to make this bill better with their amendments. From offering more time for unions to adjust, carving out more workers, and changing the audit requirements to be more fair to smaller unions -- ever attempt was valiant and seen, even if we ultimately heard the mantra of "unfriendly amendment."
We're expecting this bill to be passed tomorrow. A defense is being mounted, but the smaller unions may be without much protection.
Gentle reminder: join your #union! If your job doesn't have one, your industry probably does! Union rights are #CivilRights are #HumanRights!

#SB256 update
Next week on Tuesday, the #FL House will enter debate on SB256/#HB1445 -- the anti-union bill -- and it will then be placed on Third Reading. It is expected to be fast tracked to vote the very next day -- Wed 4/26.
If you are a part of a FL public employee #union and not currently paying dues, consider if you are able to and help your union reach the 60% dues paying membership this bill requires. If you're not a part of a union, consider joining! You already benefit from all the bargaining they do, help to protect that by doing something very simple.

Been sleeping horribly all week thanks to this stress over #SB256
J is encouraging me to get in touch with #AFSCME to help them call members and let them know about the bill. Also hoping that some of these senator's offices will get back to me with the info I requested so I can write something up. If not, I may just have to go do all the research myself and get in touch with these smaller unions most impacted by this bill.

-Ingolia's amendment to protect transit unions for Federal funding passed
-floor is open to debate and so far it's only been Dems speaking in opposition. They're making amazing arguments, I can only hope it's enough

Oh shit...my letter writing yesterday may have actually had an impact on #SB256
Senator Ingolia just filed a late amendment that specifically carves out exceptions for transit unions that get funding from the Fed. Basically allowing them to not lose their protections should they not meet recertification qualifications. All because I sent emails to his Republican friends, exposing what he said about AR and pointing out that 49USC 5333(b) requires collective bargaining to be protected in order to receive funding.
I'm hopeful that this may delay tomorrow's vote and give us more time to mount an even stronger defense they'll care about!

Looks like #SB256 will not be on the special order calendar for the week
Wondering if they're holding off on it in order to get more things on Third Reading. This is currently the only bill at 3rd reading in the #Florida Senate.
What *may* be on the calendar for Thursday 3/30 is #SB300 which is the 6-week abortion ban bill. It is currently on Second Reading, so if the floor receives the bill, they will be talking about amendments and holding discussion on it. I encourage you to watch, if you can, and send letters to senators! Seriously! We've already had contact with a few who are seriously questioning their support of the bill, so reach out if you can!
