@spaceflight Todays objection to is its tremendous carbon footprint.

A typical solar panel used in space produces 50 W / kg. The carbon footprint for launching 1 kg of payload is 50 tCO2e, hence this makes 1 tCO2e / W. If the panel would run for 20 years (175320 h) it would have a carbon intensity of 5704 g/kWh. That is more than 5 times the carbon intensity of electricity generation using coal, and more than 100 times the one of using solar panels on Earth.
