Netherlands: The number of people with #scabies is growing again

📌 The number of people with scabies is growing again. The peak is at its highest since early December. Currently, 42 out of 100,000 people suffer from the skin disease, reports research institute Nivel. There are a striking number of infestations among children between zero and four years old in Overijssel.

We did also look at #scabies #outbreaks in #carehomes for the elderly in the UK. There’s plenty of that particular NTD in higher-income settings, and outbreaks are often poorly diagnosed and hard to control in institutional settings.

As part of multi-disciplinary teams in Ghana and Togo, I’ve been pleased to be part of research that has been looking into NTDs a little more. For example, we described #scabies and other #skininfections reported to urban and rural health centres in Ghana, looking at healthcare-seeking behaviour.

A lot of fungal skin infections, 24% prevalence. Also, 6.1% prevalence of #scabies across these settings. Several cases of #yaws, and the occasional #leprosy and #Buruliulcer case.
And 5% of those with a #skininfection reported associated #stigma.

Buttocks, wrists, and between the fingers the most commons sites, but lesions observed across many body sites. More in supplementary information.

Much needed, outbreaks can be poorly controlled with delayed diagnosis.
#scabies is massively itchy and thus very unpleasant.

Een opmerkelijk pleidooi voor een harde aanpak van #schurft van hoogleraar klinische microbiologie Heiman Wertheim van het Radboudumc in Nijmegen.

Hij stelt dat serieus overwogen moet worden om een Ivermectine-pil massaal te verstrekken aan iedereen uit de risicogroepen, zoals jongeren, bij wie het nu veel voorkomt. Ook moet er bron- en contactonderzoek komen en misschien een meldingsplicht.
