The dirty little secret that could bring down Big Tech - Silicon Valley is one big grift. I knew that Uber did not make economic sense. This explains a lot. businessinsider.com/venture-ca

: "Two of Google’s new TLDs—.zip and .mov—have sparked scorn in some security circles. While Google marketers say the aim is to designate “tying things together or moving really fast” and “moving pictures and whatever moves you,” respectively, these suffixes are already widely used to designate something altogether different. Specifically, .zip is an extension used in archive files that use a compression format known as zip. The format .mov, meanwhile, appears at the end of video files, usually when they were created in Apple’s QuickTime format.

Many security practitioners are warning that these two TLDs will cause confusion when they’re displayed in emails, on social media, and elsewhere. The reason is that many sites and software automatically convert strings like "arstechnica.com" or "mastodon.social" into a URL that, when clicked, leads a user to the corresponding domain. The worry is that emails and social media posts that refer to a file such as setup.zip or vacation.mov will automatically turn them into clickable links—and that scammers will seize on the ambiguity."

: "AI language models are the shiniest, most exciting thing in tech right now. But they’re poised to create a major new problem: they are ridiculously easy to misuse and to deploy as powerful phishing or scamming tools. No programming skills are needed. What’s worse is that there is no known fix.

Tech companies are racing to embed these models into tons of products to help people do everything from book trips to organize their calendars to take notes in meetings.

But the way these products work—receiving instructions from users and then scouring the internet for answers—creates a ton of new risks. With AI, they could be used for all sorts of malicious tasks, including leaking people’s private information and helping criminals phish, spam, and scam people. Experts warn we are heading toward a security and privacy “disaster.”

Here are three ways that AI language models are open to abuse."

: "M-Pesa’s ubiquity has attracted many scammers. In 2021, a FinAccess survey found that nearly half of the Kenyans using mobile money had fallen victim to fraud or accidentally transferred money to the wrong recipients. That figure was 8.4% higher than the previous year. In 2022, a CBK report showed that 6.1% of mobile banking users and 25.9% of mobile money users had lost money through cybercrime.

In February 2023, Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested eight men alleged to be members of a criminal syndicate that had defrauded mobile money users of more than 500 million Kenyan shillings ($3.8 million). Some towns, such as Mulot in Bomet County, have emerged as operating hubs for the M-Pesa SIM-swap fraud syndicates.

In 2022, Abdi Zeila, a Kenyan businessman, filed a class action suit against Safaricom and the country’s communications authority for exposing him to fraud. Zeila had lost 495,651 Kenyan shillings ($3,766) to SIM swap fraudsters. The court also opened the door for him to invite more victims of SIM swap fraud to join the suit."
