#retrogaming #retrocomputer

I was having an annoying issue with my Super Nintendo, N64, and Dreamcast with RGB over SCART where the TV would switch to 16:9.
Turns out that if there’s a voltage on pin 8 in the 5-8V range, it tells the TV to use 16:9. For some reason, both cables were wired to output 5V here. Weird.
Desoldering the connection fixed my problem! Now the TV correctly defaults to 4:3.
@liz Personally, I have an #HDMI - #Recorder and I'm still pissed that #HDMI was adopted and not #SDI / #HDSDI for cabling outside of professional studios.
Cuz it's a pain in the ass to remove the value-removing bs that is #HDCP...
You know what was needed to record shit before #HDMI? A #SCART cable and a #VCR!

I have this really odd issue with my #crt i have my systems hooke dup with rgbs (show ps2 inn this case) and that goes through an #extron crosspoint. I send it to my #ossc no issues. Send it to my crt. And I omly get signal for a second when I switch to the input as show inn the video. I am just really confused was to why this is.
Also. I am using a #scart inout on the back of the crt.
OFC they won't officially support #HDMI due to #licensing and #cost as well as the added complexity.
Personally, I would've scrapped the idea of making an HDMI-outputing "video card" to save costs and instead make a deal with some OEM to certify compatibility with an #VGA->HDMI dongle which gets powered by the PS/2 port and have it #CommanderX16 / #X16 branded...
Cuz that'll be a cheap-to-make accessory just like #RGB - #SCART cords for 6th & 7th gen consoles were...

The #Laserdisc player is back on the big TV after succesful trial with new #SCART to #HDMI adapter tests.
@Archie8 To be honest, I very much doubt it.
The RCA and #SCART connections themselves I expect will have identical results to the naked ear. And the difference in DAC quality I expect will vary more by manufacturer/model than by generalities such as "old CD player" versus "modern DVD player".
If this were analogue versus optical #TOSLINK, that would be a different kettle of fish.
These are the insides of a #Philips DVP630 #DVD player. It has been broken for a few years and was given to me.
There are 4 boards inside. From right to left is the power supply (directly from mains), the main board, and a board for #SCART output. On the bottom is the front panel board which has standby/play/pause/etc. buttons and a small display. On the left there's the DVD reader (with a long jammed DVD in it).
The player did not turn on. After some research I found that on this model this may happen due to a bad #capacitor, C316 on the power supply board. You can see it slightly bulging in the picture (not the best angle to see it, sorry).
This is a 1000 μF 10 V capacitor. I did not have 1000 μF capacitors so I didn't try to repair this for a long time.
Recently I wanted to watch some DVD and so I thought "okay, let's see if I can repair the DVD player". So the other day I went to buy some 1000 μF 16 V capacitors. 16 V instead of 10 because I suppose this capacitor normally fails because a slightly larger voltage one should have been used in the design. Hopefully a slight larger one will last longer.
The repair was very easy, just disconnected the board, desoldered the bad capacitor, soldered the new one. Parts cost was 15 cents.
I also found the #schematic for the boards online. Capacitor C316 is related with the circuitry that ends up producing a 5 V source. I measured this after I replaced the capacitor and reassembled the player and sure enough 5 V were there (shame I didn't measure this point prior to the repair, but I didn't want to get shocked due to a large charged capacitor in the supply).
The moment of truth followed, tried to power the player on and it worked!! DVD spins, display says "loading", then "play" then starts counting seconds.
Now to test the player. The outdoors are analog. To my dismay my TV only has HDMI 🤦♂️
Tested on my parents TV which has AV input. Used a SCART to AV cable. No image detected 🙁 what a disappointment. You win some, you lose some.
A few days followed. I had the ideia that maybe the SCART board is bad, that maybe using the AV output directly would work. I didn't have an AV to AV cable at hand though. Then the other day my girlfriend found one.
Yesterday I tested the player's AV output. And it worked! The player works baby!!
TL; DR: I managed to repair an old DVD player. SCART does not work but AV does. May investigate this in the future.

Hallo zusammen,
#retrogaming #Nintendo #Nintendo64

I think @NicoleCRust will have more to say about it when she is back from her break. I am just going to leave this here...
