I went back out to Scheyville National Park to change the memory cards in my trail cameras this morning, and discovered that at least one fox has survived the eradication campaign - so far…. I’m just not seeing any foxes at all in the daylight.

A red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in Scheyville National Park, out to Sydney’s west.
A menace to Australian native fauna, and the cause of many native Australian animals becoming extinct, but still fascinating animals to observe in the wild.
The national park is conducting an extermination campaign, and I haven’t seen any foxes for about a month, so this one has probably gone to fox heaven already.

Ruins of an old grain silo in Scheyville National Park.
The national park was once a training farm for migrant boys from England. Up close to the silo, you can see how the aggregate for the concrete was made using rubbish, and it has things like remnants of old horse shoes in it.
Just one more photo of a white-throated treecreeper (Cormobates leucophaeus) before we move on. Scheyville National Park, out to Sydney’s west.

I don’t think I’ve posted this before - apologies if I have: a fox (Vulpes vulpes), Scheyville National Park.
They are destructive vermin, but it is still a thrill to get to watch one that hasn’t seen you.
The national park is about to embark on a pest-eradication campaign, so I expect I will be seeing less of them.

Look at the size of those claws, designed for a life lived on near-vertical faces.

The ruins of the old armoury in Scheyville National Park, a relic from the time the area served as an officer training camp during the Vietnam War.

Remains of an old barbed-wire fence, Scheyville National Park, out to Sydney’s west.
The national park was originally a training farm for migrant boys from England, then a migrant camp, then an officer training camp during the Vietnam War. There are lots of odd remnants of its past lives - like a useless rusted fence loosely separating the overgrown nothing on one side from the overgrown nothing on the other.

I’m reasonably confident this was a female superb fairywren (Malurus cyaneus) in Scheyville National Park, out to Sydney’s west.
I don’t know whether it’s possible to visually distinguish female superb fairywrens from female variegated fairywrens (is there a difference in tail proportion?), but from memory these ones were giving the superb fairywren call.
