This week at #ScholarlyKitchen, @kawulf and Amanda Strauss underscore the important cross-disciplinary conversations about critical #archives, using a colonial map held in the Brown University Libraries. #histodons #VastEarlyAmerica https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2023/08/24/critical-archives/

The Chefs at #ScholarlyKitchen—including @kawulf—offer their thoughts on the state of social media at midsummer, just a few weeks into the era of Threads. https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2023/07/27/are-we-finally-threads-up-with-social-media/
Good piece by Roger Schonfeld on #scholarlykitchen this week. Libraries have advocated for #openaccess but should they want to be compliance offices as new funder mandates develop? “a byproduct of situating responsibility with the research office would be to eliminate one of the factors that stands to drive the unfunded expense of open access.” https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2023/04/17/library-responsible-open-access/
"Can or should authors use ChatGPT or other AI tools in the development and writing of their own research writing? Can it be used for conducting a literature review? What about analyzing results? Or maybe for drafting an abstract from an existing article?"

Thoughtful from Todd Carpenter this am on #ScholarlyKitchen about the #InternetArchive case and CDL (controlled digital lending). Also impt to note NISO's work w Mellon on CDL. Many of those who have written about this case have connections w IA and otherwise (including me, because the JCB has a longstanding and impt relationship w IA). But we come out on different sides of this set of issues. https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2023/03/29/controlled-digital-lending-takes-a-blow-in-court/

Lots of thoughts about the #InternetArchive case. I wrote a much longer piece in 2020 abt CDL, but today shared further/ brief w #ScholarlyKitchen colleagues. https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2023/03/28/internet-archive-controlled-digital-lending/

Back in 2020, at the beginning of pandemic and the #InternetArchive's Controlled Digital Lending, I wrote for the #ScholarlyKitchen "The Internet Archive Chooses Readers."
Holds up, at least in predicting where we are now with the #Hachette decision and also in my unalloyed appreciation for aspects but not the totality of the IA's work. https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2020/04/02/the-internet-archive-chooses-readers/

An important and insightful piece on #ScholarlyKitchen by @uncpress director John Sherer about #OpenAccess monographs, their Mellon pilot, and the big remaining questions (it's still $$$). https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2023/03/23/guest-post-open-access-for-monographs-is-here-but-are-we-ready-for-it/
Historians write for public audiences and for specialist audiences. Just as important as the former, the latter's really, really important, too. Thanks to @bencarp for reminding me about this piece I wrote for #ScholarlyKitchen some years ago! #Evergreen #history #histodons https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2016/01/27/the-importance-of-academic-history-writing/

Excellent and vital analysis fr Roger Schonfeld for #ScholarlyKitchen about the consolidation of hums publishing by big commercials - one feature of driving small nonprofits out and one driver is OA policies. https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2023/02/22/hss-publishing-consolidate/
"It can be easy, and in the world of quick social media takes and a near-overwhelming world of crisis and violence, sometimes be too easy to be cynical or to deny the possibility for positive change. (There’s a reason they call it doomscrolling.) As Ron Daniels observed, “#universities aren’t going to save #democracy but we are critical institutions and there are things we can do to address this moment.” Fr my conversation w Ron Daniels in #ScholarlyKitchen https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2022/06/16/what-universities-and-libraries-researchers-and-publishers-owe-democracy/

Am thinking about how my historical data on journal turnaround times compares to that discussed by Christos Petrou for 2011–2020 on #ScholarlyKitchen.
He says:
2019/20 - average turnaround time (all disciplines) 163 days
2011/12 (all disciplines), 199 days
My data from #RoyalSociety (science only):
2009 - about 70 days
2002 - about 280 days
1960 - anything between 210-315 days...
