@laurahelmuth I try to maintain that same level of incomprehensible communication with my kids, nieces and nephews. They sigh a lot and are careful what they ask me because some of the answers require precise language of course!

I hope that at some point in my scientific career I write something that warrants a mention in though, 7 years to retirement age and I'm pretty specialized so don't hold out to much hope!

We know that wildfire smoke can cause tiny particles (PM2.5) to lodge in the lungs resulting in asthma attacks, bronchitis, heart attacks, etc. In addition, it can react with urban air pollution to create a toxic ozone.

“When unhealthy ozone levels are present, the EPA recommends staying indoors, buying an air purifier, limiting outdoor recreation to the early morning and evening and wearing an N95 mask.”

"Paleoclimatologists are racing to find Earth’s oldest ice to use its trapped air to directly measure levels from some three million years back—when temperatures were about 2-3 degrees Celsius warmer and sea levels were about 20m higher than today. This could give scientists a better idea of how much temperatures may rise in the future."

I would characterize our vaccines as serendipitously effective at discouraging hyperinflammatory crisis, but terrible at preventing chronic infection. Treatments are lackluster and difficult to access. Precautions have been thrown to the wind.

Cancelled my 20+ year sub to after they started printing normalcy propaganda. Even if everything after the opener is accurate, it betrays a willingness to manipulate readers to false conclusions. They are not to be trusted on Covid.

The struggle to keep up a “neurotypical” appearance pulls attention from other things, says Ari Ne’eman, who co-founded the Autistic Self Advocacy Network."
