For the theme “lyrical” I’m going with the use of imagination & analogy in the exploration & communication of science through thought-experiments like Lyell’s Amphibious Being! In geologist Charles Lyell (1797-1875)’s famous ‘Principles of Geology,’ he wrote that to avoid some sources of prejudice in understanding would require an Amphibious Being, 🧵1/n

The prompt gossamer made me think of the wings of this Megachile brevis leafcutter bee.

Unlike the better known, and imported honeybee, the Leafcutter bees are solitary and make no honey, but they are vital pollinators who play an important role in the ecosystem. They are found throughout the US and southern Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific. 🧵1/2

For day 9: heart, it’s trailblazing American Marie Maynard Daly (1921-2003), 1st Black woman to earn a PhD in in the US! She made important research contributions to the biochemisty of the cell nucleus & cardiovascular issues & our knowledge of the chemistry of histones & protein synthesis. She published original research establishing that….

Day 8: Simian
Straying from the prompt. It triggered a memory of “SIMEON the Whale,” the my English teacher thought Rusted Root’s song “Send Me On My Way” was about when he first heard it...Try listening and perhaps you’ll understand! Simeon struck me as a sperm whale. A fun, happy whale, perhaps the complete opposite temperament of Moby Dick. Then again, if you were being hunted, wouldn’t you be a bit grumpy?

For the prompt “simian” I made a new edition to my ongoing series of animals with fabulous collective nouns. It’s A Conspiracy of Lemurs. These ring-tailed lemurs definitely appear to be up to something. Caught in the act of scheming. The word “lemurs” mimics their tails, of course!

The ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) is a wet-nosed primate, endemic to Madagascar. 🧵1/n

Day 7: Indigo

True Indigo, Indigofera tinctoria, is the source of the plant-based dye. The glucoside, indican, is derived from the plant to produce the final product, indigo blue. Indigo red is also produced, and while also used as a dye, it is more commonly used in medical applications.

I wish my notes looked this neat when I took organic chemistry...

For Day 7: indigo a little story of analogy & bias in the most famous physicist of all. My lino block print is inspired by the earliest colour wheel, made by Isaac Newton. When he first split white light in 1665 into the rainbow spectrum of colours, he named & described what he saw as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (often denoted ROY G BIV).

Day 6: Understory

Amblypigyds (sometimes called whip spiders) are arachnids that often live in caves or rocky crevices, but sometimes live on tree trunks!

Day 6: Understory

Now that is a term I haven't heard since my high school AP Environmental class!

I used references from some photos of I took earlier this summer during morning walks.

For the prompt “understory” I thought of ferns in the dappled light of the forest floor. This is my toned cyanotype of a fern on watercolour paper.

For the theme “strangling” my gel plate prints of Vincetoxicum rossicum, also known as European swallowwort, or Dog-strangling Vine. Introduced to the NE US gardens in the mid-1800s, it’s become wildly invasive in south & central Ontario. While it doesn’t actually strangle dogs, it can be a risk to native plants and animals. It’s illegal to buy, sell, trade or purposely sell dog-strangling vine in Ontario;

Day 4: Cold-Blooded

A 3d printed kinematic model that demonstrates the way a rattlesnake's skull moves to extend and retract the fangs. I created this to help teach people about how snake skulls can move!

This will also be available in my Etsy store when it re-opens in a few days.

For prompt cold blooded, a favourite dinosaur: the torosaurus.

Torosaurus with its big frill had the largest known head of any land animal. It was a sort of long-frilled Ceratopsians who lived in at the end of the Cretaceous period, 70 to 65 millon years ago. It was a contemporary of the best-known of the horned dinosaurs, the Triceratops. Some recent research suggests that Torosaurus were not

The Musk Deer skull is my favorite skull of those I've modelled so far. Made this one purely because I wanted to have one.

For prompt “favourite” & the last day of is the pollinators’ favourite: the ridiculously titled “My milkweed brings all the bugs to my yard”

This linocut print is about the milkweed plant, beloved of the native pollinators. Well-known for its appeal to monarch butterflies, it is also a favourite of the many different native bumblebees & insects like this small milkweed bug. 🧵1/2

Welcome to ! For day 1: starry, it’s Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979), who discovered what stars are made of & that hydrogen & helium are the most common elements in the universe.

Born England, she won a scholarship to Newnham College Cambridge in 1919 where she heard a lecture which changed her life. 🧵1/n
