Our daughter is developmentally & learning disabled. She is in a mainstream science class. She has an amazing teacher who recognizes different abilities & will meet students at their levels, but still challenge them. She was chosen to represent her middle school at a regional science fair covering 1/3 of Oregon. Red alert! We have finished round one of baking and data collection for the blessed #sciencefair. This ex-scientist no longer cares whether the next generation understands or appreciates the importance of the scientific method. She also doesn’t give a fuck what the final poster looks like or how all that data gets presented. However, we can report that melted butter and an all purpose flour made the best pie crust. We had expected room temperature butter and pastry flour to win, but alas.

We've come up with testing various electrolyte drinks for electrical potential and various size and shapes for parachutes. A couple of interesting ones--do girls see more shades of red (he has older sisters who wear lipstick) and tracking the sleep patterns of cats of various ages.

@anniebeeknits the project compares the impact of different fats (shortening v butter) and fat temperatures (room temp, cold, or melted) and flour (gluten percentage- all purpose or pastry) on texture and taste of pie shells. (With 4 testers to rank factors) The permutations and data collection is overwhelming. We have baked 2 shells so far. And she’s got special needs, so this is super extra fun and why I’m helping. Was just about to make a post about this topic, and you did a better job of it…and I found it!

Not sure how it plays out in the rest of the US, but in Oregon, the stringent #ScienceFair requirements imposed by the teachers themselves (especially in middle school but lingering into high school) means that every project be contorted into the hypothesis to be tested strictures or rejected outright.

When ISEF came to town, did not see one of the HS projects test a #hypothesis.

So, we had a little #ScienceFair at the Department yesterday and i thought it would be nice if you'd meet the gang.
