@gutenberg_org @wikipedia By postulating that chemical change was no more than the recombination of atoms - with fixed and *quantized* mass - founded almost a century before quantized energy. 🤷‍♂️

Charles Henry Turner was a zoologist and comparative psychologist who studied the behavior and cognition of insects and other arthropods including spiders, bees, ants and moths.

His insights into animal behavior were a century ahead of their time — and long overlooked.

I did a quick dive into the origin of academic poster. Unlike all of the other rabbit holes, this one turned out to be pretty thoroughly researched.

Earliest record is 1967 Carshalton Medical Research Center, as 'prepared cards' of figures and indexes.

About fifty years after Smith's seminal map for the Geology of Britain and we see numerous 19th century British publishers including some version of it into their atlases, such as this from c. 1860 by Bradbury - Agnew. Hand colored to distinguish the strata.

Still a relatively young science at the time, but clearly making an impact, and unveiling an important key to understanding our world.

he's hailed as a hero for his work and for acting quickly to prevent his colleagues from getting lethal doses of radiation.

(most of them still died from longer term effects of the radiation)

but i really don't get it. he's more of a cautionary tale and was terminally wreckless. pulled a homer simpson pre homer simpson.

took it like a champ, but imo that does not a hero make.

just some

Louis Slotin, rest in new workplace safety protocals.

Truly extraordinary eBird checklist from Colombia in 1989 - the digitized tape recording attached documents the very moment of discovery for a species yet unknown to science, the Cundinamarca antpitta.

For this here’s my newest post about De la Beche’s “A Coprolitic Vision”, a pretty hilarious piece of satire that was actually among the very first pieces of paleoart, predating even Duria Antiquior: manospondylus.com/2023/05/was-

How past pandemics may have caused Parkinson's

Surviving a pandemic isn't always the end of the story – some viruses can have health effects that linger on for decades, eventually leading to a range of devastating diseases.

Carl Sagan argued that hunter-gatherers were the first scientists, who used observation and experimentation to survive in nature. His view challenges the common assumption that science is a modern invention of civilized societies. By recognizing the scientific roots of our ancestors, we can appreciate the diversity and creativity of human knowledge across time and space.

Astonishingly, Alan Turing's original paper setting out "the Turing Test" has a serious section in it discussing how ESP (ideas about telepathy, clairvoyance etc) could affect human-computer tests. The brilliant Paul Sen (who directed my bubble documentary, years ago) has just made a short video exploring what Turing thought and the consequences it had: youtube.com/watch?v=PPyvre0FHF Highly recommended as a way to spent 7 minutes of your time!
