E.M. Forster’s novella The Machine Stops (1909) suggested advanced technologies like direct messaging and video teleconferencing. Its artificial, underground setting was later used in THX 1138, Logan’s Run, and the Silo series. Written as a response to Wells’ The Time Machine, Forster wanted to highlight the centrality of technology itself.
