@cfiesler can’t agree more with this! Aside from the time it takes to access much papers, if we don’t have institutional access, it is prohibitively expensive. That being said, the rise of platforms like https://osf.io/ and https://zenodo.org/ is helping with #openaccess and #openresearch. It is hilarious that research publishing models are evolving so slowly in the age of #scihub and #libgen

@jeffcliff @brewsterkahle One of the issues with seeding #LibGen or #SciHub on the #clearnet is that in some countries like mine that is actively hazardous.

As of the last time I checked, there's no prison involved, but the monetary penalties are steep-enough to dissuade the non well-off and the #copyright & publisher cartels are petty enough to bother with lawsuits with a guaranteed inability to recover legal fees.

So, I've kinda known about Sci-Hub for a long time, but never really looked at it before today.

Sci-Hub is the Pirate Bay of scientific research papers, providing free (illegal) access to over 95% of the world's paywalled, restricted-access scientific papers and studies.

It was created (over a decade ago) and is still run today, by Alexandra Elbakyan. She is a criminal today, owing millions of $$$ for copyright-infringement-like stuff.

IDK her situation today, nor the site's, but if this site ever gets taken down, it would be catastrophic.

I'm going to learn how to use Sci-Hub (looks simple, like any other torrent site, I think), start downloading stuff and ... most importantly, how I can help, start reseeding (re-uploading) stuff, donating, etc.

Alexandra Elbakyan is a modern day Prometheus, and we all owe her so much.

Scientific publishing is a predatory and highly profitanle business. Publishers like #Elsevier and #Springer shovel public research money behind private paywalls, locking away scientific advances from less priviledged scientists and students, especially (but not exclusively) from those of the global South. As knowledge is power, this criminal industry has to be called out for ehat it is: a neo-colonial bully that is highly responsible for locking in global power structures.
