Powered by steam engines in this power station, a continuously moving cable ran around the circular subway track. The drivers could then use a mechanism to allow the train to grip this cable when they wanted it to move and release it when they wanted it to stop.

This was only possible because the subway consisted of a pair of circular tunnels, one for trains going in one direction and another for trains going the opposite way.

Ghost building on the site of the original power station for the Glasgow Subway on Scotland Street. Opened in 1896, this is the third oldest subway in Europe and it was the first and only one driven by a cable and pulley system.
