Towers and turrets, chimneys and cannons: This is what the Scots Baronial style is all about. This is Overtoun House just outside Dumbarton, but you can see such Scots Baronial features on many buildings throughout Glasgow.

The Scots Baronial splendour of Overtoun House on the edge of the Kilpartrick Hills to the west of Glasgow. It was designed by James Smith and was built in the 1860s.

The former La Scala cinema on Keith Street in Hamilton.
This beautiful building was dsigned by James McKissack in an Art Deco style with Italianate flourishes. It opened in 1921 and closed as a cinema around 1960. It has been empty since 1997.

The former Rutherglen Town Hall. It was designed by Charles Wilson in a Scots Baronial style and built in the 1860s. I've seen the distinctive tower of this building from the M74 for many years and yesterday I finally got the opportunity to view it up close.

One of the wings of the Chatelherault ornamental hunting lodge near Hamilton. It was designed by Robert Adam as an 'eye-catcher' at the end of Hamilton Palace's south avenue, and was built in between 1732 and 1743.

The Dollan Baths, East Kilbride.
Inspired by Pier Luigi Nervi's Olympic complex in Rome, it was desiged by Alexander Buchanan Campbell and built in the mid-1960s. It was Scotland's first Olympic-sized swimming pool.

The McLennan Arch, Glasgow Green, Glasgow.
Originally built in 1792 as the entrance to the old Assembly Rooms on Ingram Street, this impressive neoclassical stone arch has been moved around the city a surprising number of times before being finally ending up at its current location in 1991.

The Lighthouse, Mitchell Lane, Glasgow.
Originally The Glasgow Herald building, the Lighthouse was built in 1895 and was the first building designed by Glasgow's (and Scotland's) most famous architect and designer, Charles Rennie MacKintosh. It now houses the Scotland's Centre for Design and Architecture.

Distillers' House, 64 Walterloo Street, Glasgow.
Built in 1898 for the Wright and Greig Distillery Company, this is an amazing little building that is now pretty much surrounded by souless modern office blocks.
I especially love the fortified tower on the corner festooned with stone cannons pointing in all directions.
