This intriguing plaque can be found on the side of the 1895 former British Linen Bank on High Street in Glasgow. It reads: On this site stood the house in which the poet Campbell lived. An additional plate seems to have been added later with the text: born 1777, died 1844.

The Master of Ballantrae, 1889, is a cracking good yarn, more disturbing than Jekyll & Hyde. Fraternal hatred, and a steward (principal narrator) caught between -- a kind of threesome of hatred, thwarted loyalty and love. Makes sense that Henry James liked it. There is an Indian character, Secundra Dass, but more as a function of the plot, which ends in pre-independence America, among 'the dregs of colonial rascality'. #Bookstodon #RLStevenson #ScottishLiterature

'Captain tell me one thing: why aren't all the poor foot-pads?' Seeking critical accounts of #imperialism and #whiteness as produced in late C19 literature, I had somehow missed Stevenson. The Beach at Falesá, 1892 and The Ebb-Tide, 1893 are extraordinary and surprising tales, which went against what his public expected and were rarely read much until Penguin republished them in 1979, edited by Jenni Calder. readers of #Conrad or #OliveSchreiner -- read these! #RLStevenson #ScottishLiterature

#Balquhidder Kirkyard, #Perthshire, #Scotland. To the left of the ruined old #church, the supposed grave of legendary outlaw Rob Roy (or maybe it isn't!). He was immortalised by Sir Walter Scott- this is an area Scott (who has a claim to be the inventor of the historical #novel) made famous.

I started to hear about #NanShepherd from Samantha Walton, whose book on her I will now read. Stunned by the brilliance of the novels and The Living Mountain, the phenomenological account (she does not use that word) of the Cairngorms. The ethical interests of the novels, and the remarkable way each character inhabits an idiom of being as well as speech, are original. The Weatherhouse shouldn't just be seen in #ScottishLiterature contexts but read alongside Passage to India -- it's that good.

I've just finished reading #hisbloodyproject by Graeme Macrae Burnet.
This is written in a really unique style, using fictional historical documents to tell the story of a graphic triple murder in a remote Scottish village in the mid 19th Century. The writing is so emersive and convincing, it's hard to believe it's not a true story.

A wonderful visit to McNaughtan’s Books in Edinburgh this morning. I don’t think I’ve seen such a varied selection of Scottish poetry before, and I found a couple of George Mackay Brown items missing from the collection.
For some reason, Voyages, Brown’s 1983 collection of poetry, is quite hard to find, so it was lovely to see it there and liberate it from the shelves!

Ended up at the page of a #Gaelic lady poet whose poem I already know well from a sung #Capercaillie version. So then have to dig that out in iTunes! This in the new collection of Scottish #Poetry 1730-1830. It includes a lot of Gaelic poems (Gaelic first then translated version after) and poems by women. #ScottishPoetry #ScottishLiterature #Gaelic #GaelicPoetry #GaelicSongs #Scotland #EighteenthCentury #18thCentury

I've never really delved into short stories before, however I've just finished Every Seven Years, and Rizzio, both by Denise Mina. They were both so so well written, engaging, kind of left me wanting more but satisfied with the ending at the same time.
