Australia has a dose of ā€˜long Morrisonā€™, and itā€™s nothing to sneeze at
smh.com.au/politics/federal/au
COVID-19 may be receding in the memory but Australia canā€™t seem to shake off ā€œlong Morrisonā€, the lingering effects of a prime ministership widely deemed to have had a pestilential effect on the countryā€™s body politic. Since his departure from office 14 months ago, we have witnessed the emergence of a number of variants.

Photo of newspaper clipping I've nabbed from a friend's post on a different social media platform appears to have come from a reader's comment in the paper version of this article, which was printed in response a day after the main article: smh.com.au/politics/nsw/a-mess

has ā€˜not a drop of mercy for all of the real victims of ā€™: Bill Shorten

minister continued speaking on the robodebt scheme and Scott Morrisonā€™s response yesterday:

The member for Cook then said the royal commission was a quasi-legal process, a new Morrisonian doctrine about the law.

The royal commission was not quasi-legal, it is real and constituted by the law. 46 days of public hearings, over 100 witnesses under oath.

I can see the Member for Cook lip-syncing something ā€¦
The Member for Cook is a bottomless well of self-pity and not a drop of mercy for all of the real victims of robodebt.

has hit back at for his defence of his role in the program.

ā€œMr Morrisonā€™s version is we were all co-convenors. That wasnā€™t the case.

The opposition didnā€™t know the government was making stuff up and didnā€™t have lawful authority.

This bloke has more front than Myers ā€“ according to him itā€™s everyoneā€™s fault but him. He blames his department, he says the real problems emerged in 2016/17 [when Morrison was no longer social services minister], he blames the opposition, he blames .ā€

Shorten said that the ā€œpeople who broke the law were the Coalition governmentā€, and noted that Labor raised issues when constituents complained they had received incorrect debts.

On Monday Morrison told the House of Representatives that while he acknowledged the ā€œregrettable unintended consequencesā€ of the scheme, he ā€œcompletely rejectsā€ the adverse findings against him.

Just as long as the blame doesn't stop here ...

"Senior Department of Defence official Kathryn Campbell has been suspended without pay in the wake of the royal commission report into robodebt.
...
The royal commission report said Campbell, a former head of the Department of Human Services, had been 'responsible for a department that had established, implemented and maintained an unlawful program'.

But Campbell 'did nothing of substance' when exposed to information that brought to light the illegality of income averaging, the report said, and 'failed to act' when presented with opportunities to obtain legal advice."

Good. She's a ... not nice person, who saw to it that her masters were kept happy and the money kept rolling in, stolen from those least able to either afford it or fight the system.

We need to keep in mind however that her masters MUST be held to account as well. Without them, Campbell herself would likely have amounted to nothing more than an officious bureaucrat who did nothing of any note and got nowhere further in her career.

"The central fact in the royal commission report on the robo-debt scheme was that the punitive and expensive policy failure was rotten from the start.

This is a thorough condemnation of former prime minister Scott Morrison and former federal ministers who championed a scheme that broke the law.

It is a denunciation, also, of the senior public servants who aided and abetted the deeply unfair claims on 526,000 people who were asked to repay money they did not owe."

ā€˜Rotten from the startā€™: Morrison, Tudge and Porter are forever shamed by robo-debt smh.com.au/politics/federal/ro

Scott Morrison as PM was a micromanager.

IMHO, he knew it was illegal and did it anyway, using it for political gain.

As Iā€™ve said for a long time, heā€™s an .

Bill Shorten is rightfully furious at Scott Morrison and the public servants who orchestrated RoboDebt, and he's not in a mood to pull his punches:

The previous government and senior public servants gaslighted the nation and its citizens for 4.5 years. They betrayed the trust of the nation and its citizens for 4.5 years with an unlawful scheme which the Federal Court has called the worst chapter of public administration.

It has broken the sacred trust, that when citizens give some of their power to the Government, that the Government will make sure that it helps, not hurt, citizens. This is a report that shows how the previous government and senior public servants hurt, not helped, citizens.

David Van: former Liberal senator Amanda Stoker accuses colleague of ā€˜inappropriateā€™ touching.
theguardian.com/australia-news
Following allegations made in the Senate by Lidia Thorpe, Stoker alleges Van twice squeezed her bottom at a social event in 2020

I think Amanda Stoker's allegations are consistent with Lidia Thorpe's allegations. It sounds awfully like David Van is a serial sexual abuser.

It makes you wonder who else in the Liberal Party knew what happened and did little to disclose it. Who was the "senior female colleague" Stoker reported the alleged behaviour to? Did some people high-up in the Liberal Party "close ranks" to protect David Van? And, since Lidia Thorpe and Amanda Stoker have spoken-up, will any more victims come forward?

Lidia Thorpe in the Senate accuses Liberal David Van of sexual assault, but later withdraws comments
abc.net.au/news/2023-06-14/lid
Senator Lidia Thorpe has used parliamentary privilege to accuse a Liberal senator of sexual assault, but later withdrew the remarks.
Lidia Thorpe said then Prime Minister Scott Morrison relocated Liberal David Vanā€™s office after he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

We should listen to women if they make a claim of sexual assault, and we should believe them.
I'm not going to speculate on why Lidia Thorpe withdrew her comment from parliament, but think it's safe to say there will be more news to come.
