Over the last few days, I built a #scraper #tool for #Goodreads in #Python (because I had nothing better to do). Based on your personal library export, this tool built two spreadsheets with details about the books I've read, the authors who wrote them, and then the input files to generate a #network of the authors who influenced those authors - and then the authors who influenced those authors. I've been logging basically all my reading on Goodreads since 2015, so there is quite a lot of data.

I truly wonder how academic community will react to the end of (monetarily) free #api access to #Twitter, particularly the PhDs and Masters students who are embarking on the data collection phase of their research. Considering these projects are bound by a tight schedule, creating a #scraper may not be totally feasible.

The question will be then will institutions be willing to pay for the api access if it’s to be doomed. The dilemma is pressing, but at the same time bowing down to the platform sounds even more dystopian to me.

Happy to know more about what you think about the potential plans of institutions will be.

t was time to resharpen my favorite little scraper.
After truing the edges with a file, I stone the faces on a Soft Arkansas Stone. Then I stone the edges while holding the faces of the scraper against a small wooden block to keep the edges square to the stone. A light touch with the burnisher turns the edge, and I'm back to work.
