Making and enjoying scrapple in Lancaster PA
“Jay Smucker knows a thing or two about pork products.
He grew up working in his family’s butcher shop in Manheim. Today, he manages the third-generation family business, Smucker’s Meats, now operating out of Mount Joy.”
It’s good — trust me! I like scrapple fried crispy with maple syrup and fried egg.
I tried #Scrapple for the first time today. Not bad, sort of like a breakast sausage but lighter. 30 minutes later...
A long shot, I know, but did anyone else go to Scrapplefest 2000 in #Philadelphia? I have this button, and a hat with talk show host Kent Voss’s picture on it. I sampled a heck of a lot of #scrapple, talked with some of the vendors and marketing reps, and even got to shake Kent’s hand as he was walking around.
I'm sorry, with WHAT?
This is almost as bad as the time I went to a local festival and they served #scrapple cooked in a crockpot.
Considering how fast a dozen pigs can eat an average human body (about ten minutes), I assume at least half of pig farmers are serial killers, & I would never date a pig farmer because that's just tempting fate.
Also, my family is lousy with pig farmers. A piece of creative nonfiction about my pig farming 2nd cousin bringing handmade scrapple to my grandfather's funeral appears in the 1st issue of Hungry Ghost.

Ever since #GiantEagle stopped selling #Scrapple I don’t know where to find it in #Pittsburgh

#Scrapple. It's a meat brick made of stuff that couldn't be sausage mixed with lard and cornmeal. You slice it and pan fry it and it tastes like nostalgia to me. It's awful. It's offal. It's awesome.
Now that I live in the Midwest of the US and not the east coast anymore, I buy 8 1-lb packages of it at a time, shipped from Pennsylvania, and keep them on hand in the freezer. I defrost a little treat from time to time.
If someone was going to be visiting #Philadelphia and was only going to get one crack at eating #scrapple, where is the right place to do that?
