Day 5 of the #CanadaTrip saw us travelling to Long Point with a stop at Rondeau Provincial Park to break the journey. Amazingly, the Screech Owl had set up in the middle of a camp ground! It would have been good to have spent more time at #Rondeau but needs must.

Back in February I put my then 15 month old grandson in the car and took him with me to pick up an injured eastern screech owl from the finder and transport her to a raptor rehabilitator. Today we got back in the car to watch her return to the wild, his first release!

My daughter, an EMT, just started full time with our county EMS and that means lots of grandbaby-sitting for me. While she is busy saving human lives, I've got a 15 month old assistant in the "wildlife ambulance." His first rescue was an injured screech owl who was safely delivered to a raptor rehabilitator. Not many calls this time of year, but it's good that we can practice car seat and animal carrier logistics before turtle nesting season starts.

Et viola! The eastern screech owl box is finished and installed! Come on, little screechers!

Some notes on installation:

10 to 12 ft off the ground

S to E facing, because they like to warm themselves in the entrance hole in the sunlight

Some space from other trees so they can swoop in

2-3 inches of untreated pine bedding in the box

And the perching roost so they can perch

If I get owls, I will report back!

This is Emmet, he's an Eastern Screech Owl.

A lot of people think they're babys due to their small size, just 7-10 inches tall. As their name implies they can be found all across the forests of the eastern United States.

They'll typically eat large insects or small rodents, birds and lizards. The species is in decline, largely due to the loss of its natural habitat.
