Japanese child development researchers report this finding following their study of 7,097 children. Of the group 48.5% watched less than an hour a day and served as controls, 29.5% watched 1-2 hours/day, 17.9% watched 2-4 hours/day, and 4.1% watched 4 or more hours/day. Developmental analyses at 2 years revealed that those infants watching 1-2 hrs/day compared with less than 1 hour had a 61% higher risk of communication delays. That risk doubled (2.04) for those watching 2-4 hrs, and was almost 5-fold higher (4.78) for those watching 4 hrs or more a day. Problem solving was also impaired by 2 years with a 40% higher risk for those watching 2-4 hrs/day and a nearly 3-fold (2.67) risk for those watching 4 hrs or more. With an alt browser like Brave, once access is given to use the app, the child can access any site as it doesn’t go thru the content filter set up with .

How did I find out this work-around?

I set up Brave for them to read manga on free sites in hope that Brave’s ad filters will reduce the amount of junk when they read.

The same app, also allows them to go free to surf on any other sites with no filter.

If you use ’s to set Control & Privacy Restrictions to monitor your child’s online use - this all goes down the drain if you allow the use of alternate browsers other than Safari.

With Safari, accessing any site with ScreenTime on, will prompt a request to access the site and parents can then decide if their child can view the site. You can also set the amount of time your child can spend on the site.

I’m daily amazed by just how bad the User Experience (UX) is for Apple’s feature, as a parent or guardian. The whole process of synchronizing Downtime and App Limits across devices for multiple family members is incredibly broken.

I don’t know how they built it, but it acts like every device is broadcasting its current knowledge of limits to every other device. And whichever device broadcasts last, “wins”. And if the device that broadcasts last is out of date? It just overwrites everything newer, whatever limits you just changed.
