The breakneck pace of our first film, Billy Wilder's ONE, TWO, THREE (1961) inspired this week's second pick. Going back to almost two decades earlier, we watch the mother of all snappy-dialogue pictures, HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940, Howard Hawks) #YabtM #movies #film #screwballcomedies #screwballcomedy #CaryGrant #RosalindRussell #reviews #YouTube #cinemastodon https://youtu.be/vI5wKT-LrXM

#TCMParty "In this war, women have proved they can do anything a man can do.". This is why I love #screwballcomedies from the 1930s/1940s. Very progressive for their time.

Continuing to explore the #CriterionChannel's curated collection of #ScrewballComedies, we watched Tay Garnett's 1937 film "Love is News" starring Loretta Young, Tyrone Power, and Don Ameche.
An heiress (Young) turns the tables on a gossip columnist (Power). Hilarity and romance ensue.

Saw 1942's "The More The Merrier" for the first time . . . but I never realized that "Walk Don't Run," which I've seen a dozen times, was its remake. Well, the remake was excellent, I now realize, and the premake was too. Jean Arthur has a physical comic brilliance, Joel McCrea is his usual agreeable self, Charles Coburn is no Cary Grant but is just fine, and George Stevens, of course, knows how to direct screwball.

Watched 1937's "Theodora Goes Wild" for the first time – Irene Dunne's first comedy. Screwball, implausible, and a throw-away subplot. Dialogue isn't particularly snappy, so it's not as stylized as some of its genre. Personally, I don't get the appeal of Melvyn Douglas as a romantic lead; like the characters, I mostly wished he would go away. Enjoyable, but Dunne was still working out her comic perfection.

How did I let decades pass without watching 1937's "The Awful Truth"? How did I dismiss Irene Dunne, who is absolutely on fire in it? And the arch and lovely Cecil Cunningham.
The dialogue is snappy, the premises absurd, the comedy in words, gestures, looks and situations.
Criterion Channel is featuring #ScrewballComedies this month, and there are some real gems on offer.
