Matthew 13:16, "But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear;"

Why is it that Jesus told the disciples they had hearing and sight, apart from everyone in Israel?

The people were not physically deaf or blind; in this Scripture, Jesus was speaking on a deeper level.

He is trying to make us aware that even though our physical eyes and ears may be working properly, our spiritual senses could be inactive.

We can be reading His word blindly, in a way that He did not intend but God wants to teach us the correct way.

Scripture says that God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble (Jas 4:6-7).

A proud person is someone unwilling to learn or to even consider anything outside of their system of belief - it is someone who is ‘set in their ways’.

Scripture tells us that a fool is right in their own eyes, but the wise listen to counsel (Pro 12:15).

We are called to trust in the Lord, not leaning on our own understanding, that if we acknowledge Him in all our ways He will direct our path (Pro 3:5-6).

True humility is being able to admit when you're wrong or when you don’t have all the answers; it is being willing to listen and learn from sound advice that will improve and change your way of thinking and living for the better.

The Lord has nothing against rest itself but, spiritual sleep is something we want to stay away from.⁠

There is a positive and a negative to things in scripture and the spirit of slumber is not of God. ⁠

If we're sleeping spiritually, we aren't aware of what Jesus is doing. (Mat 24:42) states we must be alert and ready for the Lord's coming. ⁠

To stay spiritually awake, we must have eyes to see and ears to hear. To gain these, we must learn from the Apostles. They have the ability to train up others to stay spiritually awake, as they are the ones in the church woken up first by God.⁠

There are many types of mindsets we can have, both positive and negative. In scripture, The Lord mentions a negative one, being the carnal mind. ⁠

Carnality can mean pursuing our sinful desires and preferring this fallen nature (Gen 3:23-24) over the truth God is wanting us to return to. ⁠

Scripture says God is at war with our mind and we must lay down our desires before Him, so we do not become eternally sealed in this beastly form (Ecc 3:18). ⁠

Romans 8:7-8 the mind of the flesh [with its sinful pursuits] is actively hostile to God. It does not submit itself to God’s law, since it cannot, and those who are in the flesh [living a life that caters to sinful appetites and impulses] cannot please God. ⁠
