I've been muttering for months about a Scrub Jay couple that took over my back yard. (I nicknamed them Jack & Jill, as in “don't even think about skimpin' on them baby muffins” Jill.)
So when I saw two Jays up on the telephone pole surveying their domain, I took a picture out of habit. Only later did I notice they aren't the same birds... and they're young 'uns.
I guess Jack & Jill were productive.

After a very active winter and early spring, my backyard songbirds have almost disappeared. The “regulars” — chickadees, juncos, and titmice — will call to me, grab a few bites from the feeder, but then fly off. Even the finches, who were so numerous I'd dubbed them “the finch mob”: not even one.
I suspect this couple might be the reason why. We're way past breeding season, but they seem to patrol the yard and I watched this morning as they drove off an adult male woodpecker. This is also the first time in 30 years I've seen two birds together on top of the telephone pole.

Picky Scrub-jay will pick up and put back 2-3 peanuts before settling on the perfect one.

Then their idle dialog snaps into unanimous shrill high gear and all fly up. The alarm gets my hominid notice too; I hear this massed call when an accipiter flies past. Today, only a scrub-jay coming in. Less dangerous, sure... but still omnivorous, not picky, and outweighing an unwary #Bushtit 15 to 1. Careful!

We went to see the winter birds in #SauvieIsland, most especially the #SandhillCranes. They are the largest species of crane in North America and their distinctive call is haunting. We also saw #BaldEagle, #HarrierHawk, #Kestrel, #SnowGoose, #CanadaGoose, #Coot, #ScrubJay, #RedwingBlackbird, #WesternMeadowlark, and a few others. What a gorgeous day!
If you go, don't forget to buy a wildlife parking permit at the store next to the bridge.

Strong legs, adaptable generalized body plan, versatile utility beak, and appropriate jaunty attitude and inquisitive nature for negotiating Mesozoic challenges. I think the body proportions and long tail give a real Archaeopteryx/Anchiornis look. Though the rectrices are anchored on to a stubby little pygostyle rather than a long dinosaur tail. Okay, also maybe missing the teeth.
