@Monte_Lin we did the same thing with #ScumAndVillainy because we ran out of time during our Thursday night games. We ended up doing downtime offline, which felt kind of mechanical. We got some RPG hooks from it, but not a lot. With #CyberpunkRED, we plan to dedicate a session (more like 1.5 sessions) to downtown after a mission. Like you alluded to, it’s a great opportunity for world building and learning more about the characters.

@Acantigue Welcome home! #BladesInTheDark is a great game (so is its sci-fi cousin #ScumAndVillainy). I played both and would love to return to them one of these days.

It seems to me that these are all just different game mechanics to represent the same kind of science fiction setting. Anything that isn't a game mechanic question should apply to each one like to any other.

Last night we finished our campaign of #scumandvillainy. It was a custom combo of Warhammer 40k and Firefly. I played Dorobo, basically Star Wars Lupin the 3rd. We pulled off many a messy heist, despite our best intentions.

The game I GM'd that had the most progression was #ScumandVillainy. Characters started to have larger influence around the universe and more important people trusted or hated them. Raised stakes.

They also got their own space station & defended vulnerable people when no one else would. They found an audience for change because of their reputation. Strongholds.

Players had their faces spread across the galaxy on light beams because of quest rewards.

I'm not doing a traditional D&D setting because that doesn't interest me either. Instead, I'm going to try an underwater, magic-punk setting, a la The Adventure Zone: Ethersea. Since Ethersea debuted in mid-2021, this is something I've been tossing around in my head: I think the arc would have been better if they had played #ScumAndVillainy (a rework of #BladesInTheDark with a Star Wars / Firefly flavor), with a slight tweak to take place underwater instead of in space. With that in mind, I've been mulling over what that tweaked game would look like, mechanically, but Scum & Villainy bakes its setting into the mechanics to some degree, and making a whole new robust setting to explore a game's mechanics has been daunting. So I'll do it this way. Some of the earliest work was done by me a few months ago, but I'll be adding to it as I go. I'll have visuals to go along with this soon.

<_< Sitting here considering a Forged in the Dark hack. My recollection of the trauma system and some of the clocks during some games of Scum and Villainy fit the setting and lore of the idea I have.
Except, unlike Powered by the Apocalypse, I have minimal experience w/ FitD, and also I haven’t even finished my Monsterhearts 2 skins. :blobcatsleepless:
