That's correct.

The "face value" context I was referring to was on Social Networking Systems (SNS) and their clients (apps, etc) such as #Twitter #Fediverse #Scuttlebutt #Mastodon etc (communicating with people on the internet, in general)

For example, I generally use SNS to promote sustainable living (e.g., explaining how to mitigate climate change). It's difficult to know if a person (that I do not know) on an SNS is being honest or not. For example, many industries spread disinformation ( e.g., greenwash) & too many people are not informed of the life sciences & or have lifestyles agendas that do not align with truly wanting to transition towards a sustainable culture. (Though may virtue signal that they do)

So, on SNS, because I can't know someone's personality (e.g., trust is an earned quality that takes time to develop), I am going to intentionally interpret people's words at face value (even if I detect that they're not being honest. i.e., the benefit of my doubt).

For example, and as a thought experiment. I have replied to the paragraph you wrote "I don't think it would be healthy for society to let lies go unchallenged, as they will fester and grow and take over"

By assuming that you meant every word you wrote (i.e., being honest). Being honest is not the same as being correct. People can be greenwashed and honestly believe in incorrect ideologies (especially when so many industries are spreading disinformation)

People believe they're honestly wanting to mitigate climate change (a story they tell themselves), but, they don't change their own lifestyles so as to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (e.g., they don't quit eating red meat or flying on jets).

Who is going to reduce greenhouse gas emissions if most people don't try to reduce their activities that are causing greenhouse gas emissions?

Scuttlebut & the fediverse both have many clients (software apps). However, Scuttlebut is a social network built on the peer-to-peer SSB protocol.

The Manyverse (For Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux) looks similar to #mastodon. https://www.manyver.se/

Manyverse is a social networking app with features you would expect: posts, likes, profiles, private messages, etc. But it's not running in the cloud owned by a company, instead, your friends' posts and all your social data live entirely in your phone (or computer). This way, even when you're offline, you can scroll, read anything, and even write posts and like content! When your phone (or computer) is back online, it syncs the latest updates directly with your friends' phones, through a shared local Wi-Fi or on the internet.

Thus far Matrix is the largest out there, followed by ActivityPub, but the end goal should be a decentralized social web.

This post aged *so* well: not only I have finished the book and still love it, I learned about Secure #Scuttlebutt there and found it is exactly how I would have loved to extend PicoGopher! 🤩
SSB could run on cheap wearables that provide an AP to connect to, thingies that could be permanently left somewhere and powered by solar.

Huh, media sosial #Scuttlebutt ternyata menarik juga. Ketimbang menyimpan data pengguna di instances yang terfederasi, Scuttlebutt menyimpannya di perangkat pengguna -- terdistribusi. Atau mungkin lebih tepatnya, setiap perangkat (laptop, smartphone) menjadi instance sendiri-sendiri. Entahlah, seperti hasil perkawinan Nostr dan ActivityPub.

Good feature comparison.

Both protocols decentralized. Nostr had a lot of movement and growth since this was written some weeks ago, also new clients.

That's a fair point.

My original rant-ey question was around libraries for projects like #IPFS (it has since gained a #Golang implementation but same FOIL question still applies to that), #WebTorrent (although that one is also bound-up in WebRTC) and #ScuttleButt.
