"While the creature has been noted by marine life enthusiasts since the 2000s, sea anemone researcher Nicholas Yap took about a decade to conclude that this species is like no other."

Using Aiptasia as a model for the - system, @Guse_Lab asks why LAMP1-coated are tolerated, while non-symbionts are ejected via - symbiont seems to suppress host immune system; host mTOR signalling also key.

This photo from 2022 always makes me smile, and makes me want to eat @mrkiplingpies Bakewell tarts. A dahlia anemone (Urticina felina) from the Sheringham snorkel trail.

I had to include another beadlet anemone (Actinia equina) in my 2022 favourite photos roundup! This individual has it’s beautiful tentacles on full show. Delightful!

I could post a million favourite photos of the plumose anemones (Metridium senile) I saw dock fouling in Plymouth this autumn. This was one of my top finds because it was so chonky!

Who doesn’t love a good beadlet anemone (Actinia equina) blob? I was particularly attracted to this one because of its near-perfect dome-ness, it’s pin-striped suit and that hint of electric blue on its base.

The stunning beautiful snakelocks anemone (Anemonia viridis). We don’t see these in Norfolk, but I was lucky to encounter them in both Scotland and Devon this year. Those pink tips! 💕

This North Sea tube anemone (Cerianthus lloydii) wasn’t found in the North Sea, but in a sea Loch off the the Atlantic (I know the North Sea is part of the Atlantic too, but this was on the west side of Scotland rather than the east). They live all around the UK, and I saw this one intertidally up in the Scottish Highlands. The tentacles retract into the tube when disturbed. It was an exciting find!

I hardly ever see these beauties in the intertidal as they’re more a sublittoral species. But once in a while, on a really low tide, I may come across one. Dahlia Anemone (Urticina felina).
