"A 2023 report shows concrete degradation has expanded from seven to 10 structures at the Seabrook plant.

"Discovered and reported by NextEra’s personnel in 2009, #ASR is a slow-developing type of degradation that can occur in some #concrete when moisture is present. Found most often in dams and bridges, ASR manifests as micro-cracking, staining, expansion and deformation of concrete.

"So far, the #NRC’s repeated inspections determined ASR in Seabrook Station’s structures poses no immediate threat to public safety."

Hey @frederick, did you read this? I can't believe you're pro-#nuclear now. After all, you were there with me at #Seabrook in 1977, and you wrote this in 2018: "June 6, 2018: "When the nuclear industry demonstrates it can build safe and economic power stations and manage the toxic waste they produce, there will be a role for nuclear energy. Until then, we should base our future energy policy on existing renewable options."

Do you have some inside information on how the nuclear industry has figured out what to do with the waste? I guess just dump it into the water, like #TEPCO? Please, enlighten us!

Regulators outline #Seabrook Nuclear Station 2022 safety record

SEABROOK, N.H. —

"Federal regulators have released their annual safety report for #SeabrookNuclearPowerStation.

"However, an issue first brought to light more than a decade ago is still being closely watched by regulators.

"Alkali silica reaction, or #ASR, is a form of gelling in the plant's concrete.

"Retrofitted supports have been installed in some areas to compensate for cracking.

"'So as the concrete expands, it can create tresses in the building,' Daun said. 'So right now, they are monitoring it.'

"Joanna Hammond has long opposed the nuclear power station on the Seacoast.

"'I think they're doing the best they can. I don't think it's enough,' Hammond said.

"She said her concerns about a potential disaster were only made worse last summer when a false alarm was triggered over loudspeakers at #HamptonBeach, creating a temporary panic that something at the plant had gone wrong."

Saw some of the most beautiful skies in #seabrook Washington a few weeks back 😍 when we went to the ocean for a few days.

My latest blog post, inspired by C-10's recent demand for the NRC to pay more attention to the ASR issues at the #Seabrook nuclear plant. I spent much of the day reviewing the NRC reports and also reading scientific articles about #ASR -- which causes concrete to degrade, and which has a number of causes. I did my best to try and summarize the issue -- which currently has no solution! Concrete is used in all 144 nuclear plants worldwide as well as long-term storage of radioactive waste!
