How can supercharge
Forecasting, change, and coastal living are all changing how we experience hurricanes. Climate change is loading the dice on most phenomena. One of the clearest impacts of climate change is rising and making more severe and coastal more common and dangerous. technologyreview.com/2023/08/3

Hundreds of people have to abandon their Caribbean island home permanently due to rising sea levels. The residents of Barbuda, a small island in the eastern Caribbean, have been living in shelters since Hurricane Irma destroyed their houses in 2017. The island is now uninhabitable and the people face an uncertain future.

deeply moving personal account by Sue Slatford of how her home in was demolished, very suddenly, due to . As Sue says, with and this will affect more and more of us - we have so much coastline in the UK and it won’t all be protected. This sentence reallt got me:

“There was no compensation and no counselling”

Climate change will raise sea levels, cause apocalyptic floods and displace almost a billion people - and we are totally NOT prepared for this probably scenario. "Sea level rise from our past of heat trapping emissions is really baked in for the next few decades." salon.com/2023/08/28/climate-c

[Slideshow] A look at Earth in 2050 if isn't stopped

Story by Zeleb.es

"Many scientific reports estimate that temperatures could rise by 3°C in the next thirty years, which would cause sea levels to rise all over the world. To make us aware of the we find ourselves in, scientists at have imagined what some iconic places on our planet could look like if we do not act."

>Sure, we could argue that people shouldn't live in fire/flood prone areas, but when those areas include entire towns eg Lismore,

Sure they shouldn't , back in the '84 (I think it was, might have been '82) Royal Commission for the Flooding of Lismore, the recommendation was everyone move up the hill and rebuilding not be permitted near the river, nothing moved except the council's works depot and everyone rebuilt, so here are are.

There are some examples were remedial action can occur, Roma's flood levee springs to my mind.

>or suburbs of major cities eg Canberra, that argument doesn't work.

Sure it does again, medium density cities are the only thing that will work. Rip up roads, car parks and garages when houses are sold, build solar panels on roofs, insulate homes, plant shrubs and trees, cycle and ebuses not the urban sprawled car dependent nonsense that caused this that we have now and a 300m cleared firebreak thats maintained, around the city.

You've also left out , vast areas should be undergoing managed abandonment NOW, not when the rising ocean washes away infrastructure.

Gold Coast for example will become unlivable becase of SLR. I'd also suggest anything North of Gympie start being abandoned now, it will take 50 years at least. I'd argue its unlivable now and will only get worse. As the IPCC has said, most of the tropical areas of the world will become unlivable.

You also make it seem like the laws of nature don't apply ? That there is some magic solution ? Sure Government will subsidise insurance when the squawking about it becomes incessant, like they have in North Qld but all that does is make it worse and kicks the can down the road as people keep building all over flood plains and in high fire risk areas. After all, why not, they can get insurance.

Alas we seem to have subsidized entitlment for action.

I haven't had house insurance for 20 years. I am careful when I buy to consider risk.
