Hundreds of islanders forced to abandon homes amid rising

Experts worry it will put the culture and way of life of ’s community of fewer than 2,000 at risk

by Verity Bowman, September 6, 2023

"Hundreds of people are preparing to escape a tiny Caribbean island as rising waters threaten to engulf their homes.

"The densely populated island of Carti Sugtupu off ’s north coast is under threat from climate change induced sea level rises, suffering from flooding on a regular basis.

"Experts say the sea will engulf and dozens of neighbouring islands in the Guna Yala region by the end of the century.

Forty-nine of the islands are populated and are just a few feet above sea level.

The Last shows how rising will transform habitats

Story by Chrissy Sexton, August 31, 2023

"The results of the study show that higher global temperatures will trigger a rise in sea levels that will lead to instability and profound changes to coastal , including Marshes, forests, and islands.

"'Mangroves and tidal act as a buffer between the ocean and the land – they absorb the impact of wave action, prevent erosion and are crucial for of fisheries and coastal plants,' said study lead author Neil Saintilan of Macquarie University. 'When the plants become water-logged due to higher sea levels, they start to flounder."

"In the worst-case scenarios, these coastal habitats, will shrink - and in some cases wash away - as they have in the distant past, according to the study."

“Within a few decades, in every part of the country will be faced with an inescapably altered . will rise up to half a metre on the by 2060 and approach a full metre by century’s end. Levels on the will rise more slowly, but the more urbanized coastline around and lower-lying communities will require massive upgrades to the keeping them dry.

Is anyone paying attention (other than Greta)? Speaking about oceanographers and serious climate scientists tell us in no uncertain terms that
“…under any temperature rise scenario, countries from Bangladesh to China, India and the Netherlands, all with large coastal populations, will be at risk. Megacities on every continent will face serious impacts, including Lagos, Bangkok, Mumbai, Shanghai, London, Buenos Aires and New York.” theguardian.com/environment/20

Record rise in ’s threatens cities like

by Nectar Gan, April 13, 2023

"Sea levels on China’s coastline have hit their highest on record for the second year in a row, rising more quickly than the global average and posing a serious threat to coastal cities such as the financial hub of Shanghai.

"In 2022, China’s coastal sea levels were 94 millimeters (3.7 inch) higher than 'normal,' defined as the average over the 1993-2011 period, making it the highest since records began in 1980, an official at the Ministry of Natural Resources said Wednesday at a news conference.

"The swell was 10 mm higher than in 2021, when the previous record was reached.

"The temperature of China’s coastal waters has increased significantly due to global warming, and the rise in sea levels has accelerated, said Wang Hua, head of the marine forecasting and monitoring department at the ministry."

Nice to see some coverage of increased flood risk in the Fens on tonight. Action needed to protect our land and food security.
Though admittedly only watching because my Dad was on it. (shame they didn't tell the BBC how to pronounce Gent though 🙄)

Article on @hakaimagazine

"Of the 48 different lichen species Rosentreter and DeBolt found at their two Florida survey sites, 11 are reliable indicators of salt water’s presence. Seven of the species only like to grow in places with very low saltwater impact, while four are salt tolerant, so finding them growing suggests the site has a moderate history of salt and a higher risk of being affected by rising seas."
