@haley_exe Mastodon will most likely not grow without better #search and #quote functions. Individual users should be able to decide whether their posts are #searchable and #quotable.

@graue don’t want to be pedantic about how to write #userstories, but i am confused by what this feature does. Is it:
- Given I have a discoverable account
- Given i wrote a toot with the word “hello” in it (not a hashtag)
- When a user searches the word hello only, with or without “”
- when a user searches the word hello at least
- then results display my toot

And what about the difference
- my account is searchable (handle, bio)
Vs.
- my toots are #searchable

With the uptick in community members, a quick recommendation: #hashtag your posts with key #topics or ideas. The quickest way to have your content found (outside chain reposting by others), is to make it easily #searchable with #keywords

Some hashtag keywords right in the post, others hashtag a block at the end (I just did both). Either way, they make your content much more #discoverable to the #fediverse.

#tootfinder #search syntax is not case-sensitive (or case-insensitive if you must torture the English language even more than it already is). You can append * to the end of a word (like in the olden days of searching). You can use NEAR, OR and the prefix -.

Mastodon by default unfortunately only supports searching via hashtags. You can't search via content in posts unless they type a specific hashtag.

There are exceptions though...

The https://universeodon.com instance has implemented a custom feature for searching text in posts. I'm hoping this gets adopted by more instances! It makes finding like minded and interesting discussions that much better.

Trying there might help you find skeptics and ufo related discussions that way 😉

I'm not sure of the value of posting this here, as it's not #searchable, but I will anyway.

In case anyone else stumbles upon this.

The error message directing you to https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/visual-cpp-build-tools/ is either wrong, bad or incomplete.

setup.py build_ext is running "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\Installer\vswhere.exe" -latest -prerelease -requiresAny -requires Microsoft.VisualStudio.Component.VC.Tools.x86.x64 -property installationPath -products *

which wasn't returning anything even though the "Visual Studio Build Tools" were supposedly installed (hell, I had a developer command prompt and everything)

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/install/workload-component-id-vs-build-tools?view=vs-2022 shows that at the time of writing, you'll want to go to the VS installer and install Microsoft.VisualStudio.Component.VC.Tools.x86.x64 or more likely, tick the box that says MSVC v143 - VS 2022 C++ x64/x86 build tools (Latest)

This looks like it will not fix this particular issue with libarchive, as it needs io.h, which appears to be a non-portable header from Unix. Which is strange, as Microsoft ship something libarchive-shaped in tar.exe on Windows 10.

@bok @Steveb #Hashtags are only #searchable across multiple instances if someone is following/boosting/interacting on the targeted instance or the instance is using a relay.
Continuous inter instance transport of content only happens if the sender is interesting enough to be followed.
Thus marketing drivel with tons of hashtags will mostly annoy people on the sender’s instance, exclusively.
These are aspects of #Mastodon which may make it “slow” but which I consider brilliant.
