Mothers searching for their missing children were beaten by 70 members of the Querétaro Prosecutor's Office last night. They broke cell phones & attacked children in tents at the protest camp. 112,000 are missing in Mexico & this is the way they treat the mothers.

Another important thing about and .

The reason on non-hashtagged words is lampooned whenever someone tries to implement it in fedi, is it denies discussing topics without exposing people to abusers who simply want to pick fights. Some , or , in online spaces helps.

When people want to be more broadly found, they'll hashtag. If they don't, they won't.

There's a movement also, which also plays into this.

We are supportive of adding bots of accounts or on fediverse, until such time as the folk on the social move over to Fediverse.

Such accounts ahould be by search engines so people can find it when for the entity online.

By not having results in search engines it really only hurts ourselves.

If its on Fediverse, its public — not private.

@tupper More and more companies are turning on their users, assuming they're fair game to milk for money. Unfortunately it's going to backfire and hurt their profits just like it did with Twitter. It shows that federated approaches may be the only way to avoid having your social networks get used by greedy interests.

Mastodon's biggest setbacks are the limitations in searching and lack of features that are intentionally excluded from an exaggerated fear of harassment. There are discussions in the works to hopefully change this. Having consent dependant searchability that users can opt-into, or on by default for the the instance.

See this discussion: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

Some instances like the one I'm using universeodon.com has enabled custom search features from this patch github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon

It also has a custom UI theme that looks more similar to Twitter you can try from here elk.universeodon.com

Yeah unfortunately it does make posts more difficult to read. It's also not possible to search combinations of tags, add conditions to include or exclude for complex concepts. That's only possible through fulltext elastic search.

There are other suggestions of hiding them and making them toggleable which would also be decent, but not as good.

Definitely room for improvements!

A feature that's been missing for Mastodon has been fulltext searching of posts, aka fuzzy search. :fedi:

Searching is mainly done via hashtags so a common trend is to add the relevant tags at the end of posts.

It's a bit of a controversial topic to have the content of posts be searchable on Mastodon, but I'm sure with proper consent options to opt-in or opt-out that hurdle will be solved with good implementation. The discussion lives on here: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

There are exceptions though using custom implementation patches serverside like this one on universeodon.com written by clever people like VyrCossont github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon

For news based instances you really do want some forms of better searching like this implemented.

Welcome to the fediverse and best of luck! :elmo_fire:

Yes, you have to be on an instance that has that search extension installed. On regular servers it will not work.

It has this custom patch by VyrCossont installed: github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon

Heres what I get when searching: "npr"on Universeodon
