⛴️The ACTNOW expedition started last Friday aboard the RV Pelagia. The crew has set sail to the Doggers bank to collect data on different elements of the food web. Stay posted about the research and experiences of the crew via the blog👇#NorthSea #SeaResearch

The RV Pelagia has left this morning for the NoSE-expedition.
The biologically productive North Sea impacts the global climate through exchange of carbon and nutrients with the #Atlantic #Ocean. A lot of carbon dioxide (CO2) could be taken up through physical, biological and sedimentological processes. But much is still unknown. Dutch scientists investigate how big the role of the #NorthSea really is in the uptake of carbon.

Nearly 2.5 billion years ago, seas on our planet alternately contained more or less oxygen, due to the slow "wobble" of the rotating Earth🌍 says an international team with Margriet Lantink, Gert Jan Reichart and Frits Hilgen, among others.

⚠️Latest and possibly final IPCC warning: Effective climate policy is more urgent than ever.
To be on course for the 1.5-degree Paris target, global greenhouse gas emissions must be more than 40% lower in 2030 and zero by 2050.
Dutch researchers Aimée Slangen (@NIOZnieuws) and Detlef van Vuuren (PBL) contributed intensively on the new IPCC report.

"It is too early for commercial #DeepSeaMining"
🗺️ International Seabed Authority meets March 16-31 on exploration and exploitation.
"New life forms are being discovered almost on a daily basis in the #deepsea.🐟 We still hardly know what the impact of mining would be for these #lifeforms," says marine biologist Sabine Gollner of NIOZ.

Seagrass and soil animals determine the quality of natural #coastalprotection.
Jaco de Smit improved a research method to conduct realistic experiments in the sea. In doing so, he discovered that offshore seagrass is surprisingly resilient to storms and that soil-dwelling crustaceans make the soil less stable.
On Friday 17 March, De Smit will defend his thesis at Utrecht University.

What makes ecosystems resilient to climate change?
A solid spatial structure. Researchers discovered a type of pattern forming in #ecosystems that closely resembles the patchwork pattern that forms at very small scales in alloys such as #steel. Such patterns make not only steel sturdy, it makes ecosystems resilient. This insight can help in the management of natural areas.
