Hey so, even if you don't use #Searx, it probably has the most memeable name of all open-source/#privacy-respecting/not-evil search engines. Any chance we could make "Searx it" a thing?

@datendetektivin @tnbp ja, bspw. bei #Gruble (#SearX-Instanz von @adminforge ) ist u.a. #Google in den Voreinstellungen auch sowieso aktiviert. Bei Bedarf können auch andere Quellen hinzugefügt oder deaktivert werden:

Bei #Fairsuch etc. sieht es ähnlich aus.

@bubba @datendetektivin ja, bei der Instanz von #Disroot gab es zwischendurch mal Ausfälle. Bin dann auf #FairSuch , die #SearX -Instanz von @fairkom umgestiegen und da läuft es jetzt schon ca. ein Jahr ohne Probleme und zuverlässig.

I disagree with this. Ideally, yes. It would work this way. But realistically, if you want a good service then #FOSS software isn’t cutting it.

Just spreading the wealth / creating a more competitive industry is a good first step.

For example, using #Ecosia is a perfectly good search replacement. No need to go to #SearX.

#Matplotlib question for scientific graphs:

How can I get standard scientific notation (e.g. 3.4 \times 10^{-5} converted #TeXLaTeX style, at a tick) on axis labels instead of the software style '10e-5' written near the axis and 3.4 at the tick? Readers of a paper are not necessarily matplotlib fans.

pyplot.loglog() does this, but not all plots make sense as log-log plots.

#Searx searches so far only turn up hints for software 'e' notation, not standard notation.

#Searx or #SearxNG is your friend right now especially in the state of search engines.

@Catweazle I know, and I shouldn't help them with that by using them for #search. I would opt to use #Searx or #SearXNG but their #YunoHost packages seem to have issues. I could use someone else's instance, but it defeats the idea of having my own self-hosting solution.

how do you explain the #decentralization ethos to relatively "normie" people without the focus being on #privacy and still get them to understand the switch? when the people around me find out i use things like #mastodon or #searx etc and i explain why i'm anti-big-tech they just say "why does it matter?"

Searx [1] is #AGPLv3, privacy oriented, you can install it locally (I haven't tried) or you can use any instance from the recommended list [2] or find any other #Searx instance that you trust sufficiently. Some Fediverse instance sysadmins might be willing to run their own searx instance, e.g. searx.glammr.us, searx.newsie.social. Or even searx.mastodon.social.

People have asked me why I bother to maintain #chromium for a distribution. "Just use the snap (or chrome) package!"

So here's the thing - until we wrest control of the web away from #Google, we're all stuck dealing with their products at least sometimes. Having alternatives (#DuckDuckGo vs Google search, for example) is important, but also having the ability to USE their products without ceding control of our systems and information (#searX vs Google search).

sp-codes Updates:

In den letzten Tagen gab es einige Probleme mit dem #Matrix-Server und der #Mastodon-Instanz. Deshalb werden in den nächsten Tagen alle öffentlichen Dienste auf eine neue Infrastruktur migriert. Deshalb nicht wundern, wenn einzelne Dienste mal nicht erreichbar sind.

Da es schon länger Probleme mit #Piped, #SearX und #Firefox Sync gibt und ein zuverlässiger Betrieb hier nicht mehr möglich ist, werden diese Dienste am 21.07. abgeschaltet.
