Is there anything in #ActivityPub that prevents mass surveillance? seems like (most) meta data is shared openly between federated nodes, wouldn't be hard to info mine or index the fediverse, especially if you're a giant corporation or modern intelligence agency.

If you're seriously interested in #privacy look into something #P2P and ideally built on top of a distributed #DarkNet like #Tor or #i2p like #Briar or maybe #Session also #SSB i. e #SecureScuttlebutt , #freenet is cool also

@volkris interesting view. Web of trust-ness seems to be there in #SecureScuttlebutt (it "gossips" content from friends and friend-of-friend, friends are cryptographically verified by design).

Per your view, #Zot / #Nomad would work well on the user-in-control front (although whether their #Hubzilla / #Streams UX implementations work for users is questionable).

Trying out #SecureScuttlebutt. Seems like this is the logical conclusion of the HO-LI moderation proposed by @Wander.

My logic: If blocking is primarily user-based (LI) and strong moderation is just to protect the instance owner (HO), then it'll be easier for everyone to just host their own servers, which SSB does out-of-the-box by syncing full histories (ala Matrix)?

Does anyone here use #SecureScuttlebutt apps for building a community? I have #Manyverse installed — I love the concept, the execution, and the idea of the *distributed* tech behind it (public key signed posts that you get directly from their app, or from a follower who’s stored them; no ‘server’) but … it’s a ghost town for me, cos no-one I know uses it!

It’s definitely considerably less polished than mastodon, but I can’t help but fall in love with #distributed over #decentralised.

#securescuttlebutt is so cool but it only really makes sense if you have at least one account tied to a desktop computer.

Status of alt-social protocol attempts so far:

-#ActivityPub (mostly via Mastodon): 👍 By far the easiest and well into having WordPress setup as a primary instance.
-#Nostr: 🤔 Found it difficult to understand and setup at first but finally got it. Even found Dorsey.
-#SecureScuttleButt: 😩 I gave up for now. Nothing is working.

@Edent when I read the point about running instances on mobile phones my mind went to #secureScuttlebutt, a peer-to-peer social media that has no servers and as far as I know isn’t compatible with activity pub.
A few years ago I was looking into it and I found it really interesting albeit with a few aspects that made it not too practical. If we truly want to go fully decentralised (I’m not saying it’s a necessarily better) that approach makes more sense to me

@darnell @prem_k @james @ungleich #SecureScuttlebutt is a better fit for devices that aren't always online, though that doesn't really do what you want, since it's not compatible with ActivityPub.

@me #SecureScuttlebutt - it's an ad hoc mesh-like social media and file passing architecture. Fun stuff if a little squirrely.

I'm actually surprised that Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/ad hoc mesh networks aren't more popular in the Ukraine, China, and other places of interest. There are plenty of cell phones capable of driving the systems and even a fair number of Raspberry Pi-class SBCs to act as larger dedicated nodes if there is interest.

@pocmo I'm on a similar research binge! The flexibility is both a strength and a weakness. See this post about why diaspora* won't implement it (and linked posts) for some thoughtful critiques.
