This looks like a step forward in the science of earthquake forecasting.
A team from Sandia National Laboratories have studied the release of noble gases caused by induced underground explosions. Their detection could be one day use to monitor earthquakes or explosions.

Updated map of #Turkey #earthquake sequence, with historical #seismicity. The events after the M7.6 (light purple) now more clearly delineate the entire #rupture & merge to the East with the events after the M7.8 (dark purple). Quakes have continued on the M7.8 EAF segment as well.

Updated #seismicity map of today's #earthquakes in #Turkey. Events after the original mainshock (M7.8) are in dark purple, lighter purple for the events since the second larger earthquake (M7.6), which appears to have occurred on a different fault system.

Map of today's M5.4 #earthquake near Rio Dell in the context of the #seismicity in the region in the past year or so. This strike-slip #faulting event has depth estimates of 28-39 km, a bit deeper than the #quake from a year ago (and significantly towards E) with a similar mechanism.

Based on the location of the #aftershocks, it looks like the mainshock was on a left lateral strike slip #fault, a bit shallower than last year’s #quakes.
