My favorite song is "Escapade" by Janet Jackson. That may be surprising considering it's not the most intellectually stimulating song in the world ๐ , but every time I hear those opening notes it puts a smile on my face. ๐
This line in particular gets my attention every time I hear it.
"We'll make the rules up as we go along, and break them all, if we're not having fun"
My mom used to always talk about "rules." When she was judgmental toward people she would say, "they think the rules don't apply to them." When she left us home alone she'd say "you know the rules." (And to be honest, I'm actually not sure what those rules were, other than 'take no action she will notice when she gets home.')
The truth is, rules are made up by people who feel like they have the right to put bounds around our behavior. Whether we agree they have that right is irrelevant - they believe they have it all the same. A part of self-actualizing is excavating our own "rules" regardless of the ones authorities are motivated to enforce. The only truly universal "rules" are the laws of physics.
So I encourage all of us to make the rules up as we go along, and break them all if we're not having fun. We can prioritize our health and our joy, and experiment. Try different shit. If it doesn't work, try different shit. Rules are tools. And tools that don't work can be fixed or replaced.
And hopefully, as we continue to evolve as a global community, we can expand that mentality to a global scale. ๐๐ฉน๐
