Checking htop on #footiMac after two weeks of operations with its upgraded resources, and new responsibilities.

It is still far more responsive in all respects. Changes I've noticed:
1) very few web response delays for Mastodon retrieving posts/notifications or uploading pictures/videos.
2) when I logged in remotely before it would take a few seconds. Now it is nearly instant.
3) according to htop the loads are below 0.70 most of the time.
4) RAM usage has gone from 3.2GB (84%) to 6.3GB (40%)

Resources before: 4GB RAM - Dual-core i5 - 1TB HDD
After: 16GB RAM - Dual-core i5 - 1TB SSD.

Small Web (3 static Twitter Archives)
local DNS Server

Mastodon
Small Web (3 static Twitter Archives)

hmm. when I search for my new @chris@pixelfed.chrisalemany.ca account I am getting a "remote data cannot be fetched" error. Wondering if it is a server problem (because mastodon and pixelfed services are together) or a config problem on pixelfed.

After my debacle with #Apple (using their « advanced data protection » that actually corrupted all my data), time to move away from the very last #GAFAM service I was using: #icloud.

Monday, I get and configure my #Synology #NAS. I will #selfhost: pictures and home videos, email, contacts, calendar, reminders, notes, files.

#firefoxsync will be my bookmarks, history and passwords manager.

I’ll keep #AppleMusic for convenience, for now.

For anyone moaning that #jitsi now requires you to sign in with a massive corporation (#microsoft's #github, #google or #meta's #facebook) to use its (previously) excellent #video #WebRTC platform:

Try #nextcloud which has a "Talk" app for chat and video/audio calls. You can #selfHost or find a #saas for this #openSource tool that has loads of really solid group features (primarily file sharing but *so* much more).

I'm playing with #RustDesk which you can #selfhost for free, and it works in a similar way to #teamviewer.

It's great if you just want a remote control system.

Today I made a donation to immich.app - it's an incredible app that's almost on feature parity with Google photos and an important step towards ones data sovereignty. Also, it's very easy to kickstart through docker-compose.

I will continue donating to open source projects every month, as I move away from closed source apps. I am tired of services starting as awesome that slowly turn into user-hostile, tracking infested blobs. You don't get that with opensource.

Version 2.3.0 of the background worker for https://combine.social is out.

This means nothing for you as a current user because it is deployed already and running 😅

Even more so because not everyone has been migrated over from the v1.x workers to the new v2.x workers yet.

For those who have been migrated, you should start noticing that remote replies from pleroma and friendica will start showing up (because I switched from masto.js to megalodon-rs as the fediverse client library).

I myself will notice that since it is built in #Rust instead of #TypeScript running on #Node, that it uses about half as much RAM and runs 5x faster - again, as a user you won't care 😜

As always, the privacy policy is "we don't read any of your message content, we don't store any of your messages anywhere" and if you de-authorize the app we forget about you completely.

My #selfhost journey has revealed #linkding, a strong, simple and powerful bookmark manager. Special bonus: the great add-on Linkding-Injector (https://github.com/Fivefold/linkding-injector), which prominently integrates saved links into the search history of search engines. Extremely useful!
