Just before and around the time I came out as transmasc I got really into Roxy Music and watched as many early live clips as I could find on YouTube. I wasn't studying masculinity by studying its self-conscious performance, or at least I didn't know I was at the time. I thought I was just into Bryan Ferry. Which I am. But for a time his stage persona became a sort of touchstone for me, something that felt like it could explain my whole life.
