There is a silent Awareness that exists behind our mind which remains completely unaffected by the ups and downs of the personality. It is our true Self, our true state of being. When we realise this, we find that it is very peaceful, in fact it is the source of peace itself. We then begin to realise that it is the true Self of the whole universe.
