Crovie

There’s a novel waiting to be written, possibly involving #Selkies

Crovie is a small village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, dating from a time when the sea was the only mode of transport to and from Scotland's shores. It comprises a single row of houses. Crovie is situated on such a narrow ledge that any cars have to be left at the south of the village. A footpath along the shore to the west leads to neighbouring village Gardenstown.

Selkie Transformation

Whilst my selkie illustrations work as stand-alone images. I wanted to show them in a readable sequence.

It’s hard for me to take pride in my own work. I’ve always struggled with imposter syndrome. But I’m proud of this.

My selkie illustrations are faithful to the descriptions in old folktales and directly inspired by the book The People of the Sea by David Thompson.

This selkie is caught in mid transformation. Selkies are gentle creatures and I wanted to capture this vulnerability. A vulnerability which was taken advantage of by humans in folklore.

Just finished listening to this @thefolklorepodcast Podcast -- season 7, episode 115 -- #Selkies! I learned a lot and found it quite thought-provoking. Especially the possible connections to the #Sami peoples. I also noticed that #Selkie women -- like the #Samodiva -- would become "captive" to their husbands if their magical clothing were in his possession -- unable to use their powers and/or leave! Interesting parallel. I wonder if it's IndoEuropean? #Folklore

Bought Irish art this year as gifts. Various family and friends got @Ciaraioch prints. A range of ages and interests to satisfy, and all were delighted. In particular brother’s new partner enamoured of her #Selkies, and my uncle with the #LáAnDreoilín (#WrenDay). The one awkward aunt who I couldn’t match a Ciaraoich print to was sorted by me stumbling upon a print of her favourite beach by @eolai
And couldn’t resist getting something myself, so new house will have a triptych of Irish animals 💚

@costrike I don't know if it's ~fun necessarily but if you want sweet and uplifting "The Secret of Roan Inish" was rereleased recently. It's an absolutely charming #Irish story (including stories within stories) about a orphaned girl whose brother gets stolen by #Selkies. Pure spirited Irish magic and such beautiful seascapes.

I ended up working on a completely different novel, but the general idea - deeply linked writing/drawing in some kind of novel format - is something I'm still playing with - it's just turned into #SeaMonsters and #selkies.

Yesterday I finished re-reading a story I wrote in June/July last year, and edited in December last year, and you know what - it's actually really, really good. 😲

I wrote the first draft by hand, and it was such a painfully slow process, and I hated it so much - but you know what? If it means I only do a handful of edits to get the story right, rather than several dozen, maybe it's actually worth it!!?
