Here it’s important to differentiate constraints (made explicit by 4E interactions with the environment) from #affordances.

The former are retrospective the latter are prospective.

The former can be approximated in retrospect using the mentioned designed external objective function while the latter are afforded by the organism’s semantically closed internals in a way science doesn’t understand yet.

Understanding affordances in terms of #semiosis would be a start

Finished "Semiosis" by Sue Burke today - loved it, really interesting first contact novel

It reminded me of KSR's "Aurora" (which I also loved). The thoughtfulness about the circumstances of human space exploration and colonization are parallels, despite the very different setting, plot, tone, and themes.

I didn't really buy the biology & chemistry 100%, but the central themes of communication, empathy, and understanding were beautifully presented.
